Breathing at a rate of just six breaths per minute can measurably shift your entire nervous system from a state of stress to a state of recovery. In our last session, we used alternate nostril breathing to find balance between left and right. Today, we find balance in rhythm.
So let’s begin. Find a comfortable seat. Spine tall, but not rigid. Shoulders relaxed down and away from your ears. You can close your eyes, or just soften your gaze. And for a moment, do nothing at all. Simply arrive right here. Noticing the feeling of the chair beneath you.
The air on your skin. Bring your awareness to your breath. Without changing a thing. Just noticing its natural pace. The gentle rise and fall of your chest or your belly. There is no right or wrong way to be breathing right now. There is only what IS. Now. We will begin to guide the breath into a steady, even rhythm.
This is called Coherent Breathing. The goal is simple. A smooth inhale, and an equally smooth exhale. We’ll aim for a count of five on the way in… and five on the way out. Let’s begin together. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. And now… inhale… two… three… four… five.
Exhale… two… three… four… five. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. Breathing in… belly soft… lungs full. Breathing out… a slow, steady release. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. Now, for the next few rounds, continue this rhythm on your own.
I will keep the time for you. Just the rhythm. In for five… out for five. Let’s breathe one more round together. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. And now… let the counting go. Completely release control of the breath. Allow it to return to its own natural rhythm.
Just sit here for a moment in the stillness you’ve created. Notice how you feel. Notice the quiet. This state of calm is not something you found. It’s something you built. Breath by breath. This rhythm is always available to you. In a meeting. In traffic. Before a difficult conversation.
Five seconds in. Five seconds out. You now have a direct tool to regulate your own nervous system. Use it.
