A single four-second breath hold can trigger your vagus nerve, slowing your heart rate almost instantly. Last time, we used the 4-7-8 technique to lengthen the exhale for deep rest. Today, we find a different kind of calm. We find it through balance. Let’s begin. Find a comfortable position.
Seated, with your spine tall but not rigid. Or lying down, feeling the support beneath you. Allow your eyes to gently close. Or soften your gaze on a single point in front of you. Bring your awareness to your breath. Just notice it for a moment. No need to change anything. Simply feeling the rise… and the fall.
Today, we will practice Box Breathing. We are going to build a square with our breath. An inhale for a count of four. A hold at the top for four. An exhale for four. And a hold at the bottom for four. Four equal sides. Perfect balance. Let’s prepare. Take a slow, easy breath in through your nose.
And now a long, complete exhale through your mouth. Emptying the lungs completely. Now we begin. Inhale through the nose… two… three… four. Gently hold the breath… two… three… four. Exhale through the nose… two… three… four. Hold the breath out… two… three… four. That is one cycle.
Let’s continue. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Notice the stillness. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. The quiet space between breaths. Again. Inhale… two… three… four. Feel your lungs expand. Hold… two… three… four. Shoulders are soft. Jaw is relaxed.
Exhale… two… three… four. Releasing slowly, with control. Hold… two… three… four. Resting in the emptiness. Continue on your own now. I will keep the time for you. Just follow the rhythm. In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. Hold for four. Your mind may wander. That’s okay. When you notice it, just gently guide your attention back to the count.
Back to the four sides of the box. Feeling the air move in. Feeling the stillness at the top. Feeling the air move out. And the quiet peace at the bottom. Let’s complete one final round together. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four.
Now, let your breath go. Allow it to return to its own natural, easy rhythm. No counting. No effort. Just noticing. Notice the shift. The quiet that has settled in your body and your mind. This stillness is yours. You created it. You can return to it anytime, four seconds at a time.
