A 2013 study found that just five minutes of alternate nostril breathing can significantly lower your heart rate. In our last session, we focused on a daily reset to harmonize mind and body. Today we use a specific technique to bring them into balance. Find a comfortable seat.
Spine tall, but not rigid. Shoulders relaxed down and away from your ears. Rest your left hand on your left knee, palm facing up. Now bring your right hand up toward your face. Gently fold your first two fingers—the index and middle finger—down into your palm. We’ll use the thumb to close the right nostril, and the ring finger to close the left.
This is a gentle touch. No pressure needed. Close your eyes if you haven't already. Take a deep, full breath in through both nostrils. And a long, slow breath out through both. Now, gently close your right nostril with your thumb. Inhale slowly and quietly through the left nostril.
Close the left nostril with your ring finger, releasing your thumb. Exhale slowly through the right nostril. Inhale through the right nostril. Close the right nostril, releasing the left. Exhale through the left nostril. That is one full round. We will continue. I will guide you.
Inhale, left. Exhale, right. Inhale, right. Exhale, left. Inhale, left. Exhale, right. Inhale, right. Exhale, left. Continue on your own now. Following this same pattern. In through one side, out through the other. In through that same side, out through the first. Let the breath be smooth.
Effortless. If the mind wanders, that’s okay. Just bring it back to the feeling of the breath. The air moving in and out. A gentle rhythm. Balancing. Calming. Now complete the round you are on. Finishing with an exhale through the left nostril. When you are done, release your right hand.
Rest it on your right knee. Keep your eyes closed. Return to your natural breath, through both nostrils. And just notice. Notice the quiet. The stillness inside. Notice the feeling of balance. This practice, Nadi Shodhana, works to balance the two hemispheres of your brain. It calms your nervous system.
The theory says it balances the energetic channels in the body. But the practice is much simpler. It just works. What you feel right now—this quiet, centered clarity—is not an accident. It’s a state you can create. A resource you can access anytime your world feels out of sync.
You don’t need to wait for calm to find you. You can build it, one breath at a time. Carry this feeling of balance with you.
