The average person takes about twenty-three thousand breaths each day. In our last time together for Gentle Nightfall, we used that breath to begin unwinding the day's tension. Tonight, we will go a little deeper, allowing the body to lead the way. So find a position that feels comfortable for you.
Lying down, perhaps. Or seated. Allowing the eyes to gently close whenever you feel ready. And just begin by noticing your breath. Not trying to change it. Simply feeling the gentle rise and fall of your chest or belly. Each inhale, a quiet arrival. Each exhale, a soft release. Letting the weight of your body be held.
Supported by the surface beneath you. There is nowhere else you need to be. Nothing else you need to do. Simply being here. Now, bring a gentle awareness to the very top of your head. Just noticing the sensations there. Warmth, coolness, or maybe nothing at all. With your next exhale, imagine any tension in your scalp just… softening.
Allowing that awareness to drift down into your forehead. Releasing the space between your eyebrows. Letting your eyes feel heavy and soft in their sockets. Releasing your jaw. Allowing the teeth to part slightly. Your whole face, now, soft and at ease. Bring that awareness down into your neck and your shoulders.
A place where we often hold the day. On the exhale, just let them drop. Let them be heavy. Feeling that softness move down through your arms. Past the elbows. Into your forearms, your wrists, your hands. Noticing the feeling of your palms. Open and resting. All the way to the tips of your fingers.
Now, bring your awareness to your chest and your upper back. Feeling the gentle movement of your breath here. With each exhale, letting go just a little more. Moving down into your belly. Softening the stomach. And your lower back. Allowing it to release into the surface beneath you.
Feeling the weight of your hips. Heavy and grounded. And now, allowing that awareness to flow down into your legs. Through your thighs. Past your knees. Down through your calves and your shins. Into your ankles. The tops of your feet. The soles of your feet. All the way to the very tips of your toes.
Now, for just a moment, feel your entire body at once. From the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Held in this quiet awareness. Breathing. Resting. There is nothing to fix. Nothing to solve. Just this moment of peace. Rest here. Your only task now is to be.
