Settle in and find a comfortable position, lying on your back. Let your arms rest gently by your sides, perhaps with your palms facing up. Allow your feet to fall open naturally. And when you feel ready, you can allow your eyes to gently close. Begin by simply noticing your breath. Just as it is. There is no need to change it in any way. Feeling the gentle rise and fall of your belly. The quiet expansion of your chest.
Each breath is an anchor to this present moment. Right here. And right now. Now, bring a gentle awareness into your body. We will start with the very tips of your toes. All ten of them. Perhaps you notice the fabric of a sock, or the temperature of the air. Just notice whatever sensations are there. Let this awareness travel into the soles of your feet. The arches. The heels, resting against the surface beneath you.
Feeling their weight. Allow this soft attention to move into your ankles. And up into your lower legs. Your shins and your calf muscles. Noticing any sensations of tightness, or warmth, or tingling. Whatever is there, simply notice it without needing to change it. This awareness now flows into your knees. The front, and the back. And up into your thighs. These large muscles that have carried you through the day.
You can invite them to soften. You can invite them to release their holding. Feel the entire length of both your legs now. Heavy. Soft. And at rest. Bring your attention to your hips and your pelvis. Feeling the points of contact where your body connects with the ground. A sense of grounding. Of being fully supported. Let the awareness drift up into your lower back. And into your abdomen. Feeling the gentle movement here as you breathe in… and as you breathe out.
Letting go of any holding in the belly. Awareness expands upward into your chest. Your ribcage. Your heart space. A feeling of openness here. Now, let your attention travel down both of your arms, all the way to your fingertips. Notice the sensations in your palms. Your wrists. Your forearms, elbows, and upper arms. Feeling the weight of your arms resting by your sides. Completely supported. Gently guide your awareness to your shoulders.
A place where we often carry the weight of the day. Imagine that weight simply melting away. Down your back and into the surface beneath you. Let your shoulders feel soft and wide. This softness moves into your neck and your throat. Allow your jaw to unhinge slightly. Releasing any clenching. Your tongue can rest softly in your mouth. Feel the muscles in your face begin to soften. Your cheeks. The delicate muscles around your eyes.
Your eyebrows. And the space between your eyebrows. Let your forehead become smooth and clear. Like still water. This gentle awareness moves to your scalp... the back of your head... and the very crown of your head. And now, for a few moments, be aware of your whole body. All at once. From the tips of your toes to the top of your head. A field of sensation. Breathing. Resting. There is nothing to do. And nowhere to go.
Simply be here. Held and supported. Letting the day dissolve into this quiet space. As this meditation comes to a close, know that this stillness is always available to you. It is always here. There is no need to rush. When you are ready, you can begin to bring some gentle movement back to your fingers and toes. Or you can simply drift from this quiet space into a peaceful sleep. The practice is complete.
Rest well.
