Your sense of smell is the only sense directly wired to the parts of your brain that hold memory and emotion. In our last time together, we practiced letting go into quiet relaxation. Tonight, we will create a place to put what we release. Find a comfortable position.
Allowing your body to feel supported. And when you feel ready, gently close your eyes. Let’s begin with the breath. No need to change anything. Just noticing. An easy breath in through the nose. And a long, slow breath out. Feeling the gentle rise of your chest or belly as you breathe in.
And the gentle fall as you breathe out. Letting each exhale be a little softer... a little longer... than the one before. Now, bring your awareness to your body. Noticing any areas of tightness or tension. Perhaps in the jaw. Allow the teeth to part slightly.
Let the tongue rest. Notice your shoulders. If they are holding on... simply invite them to soften. To melt down and away from the ears. Letting go of the day. Setting it down without judgment. It is finished. And now... you are here. I invite you now to imagine a place.
A place of perfect peace and safety. This is your own inner sanctuary. It might be a place you have been to before. Or a place that exists only in your imagination. It does not matter. Simply allow the image to arise. What do you see here? Notice the light.
Is it the soft glow of morning... or the warm light of a fire? See the colors around you. The shapes and the shadows. And what can you hear in your sanctuary? Perhaps it is the sound of gentle waves. The rustle of leaves in a soft breeze. Or maybe...
it is just deep, profound quiet. A silence that holds you. Now, notice what you feel. The temperature of the air on your skin. The texture of the ground beneath you. Is it soft sand... cool stone... or a warm blanket? Feel the complete support beneath you.
And finally... that sense of smell. What scent fills the air in this place? The clean smell of rain. The fragrance of woodsmoke... or wildflowers. A scent that means safety. A scent that means peace. Find a place to rest here in your sanctuary. And as you settle in...
feel the deep sense of calm. In this place, you are completely safe. You are perfectly at ease. Any thoughts or worries from the day simply dissolve at the edges of this space. They cannot enter here. This place is only for your rest. Only for your peace.
Know that you can return to this sanctuary whenever you need to. It is always here. Waiting for you. This peace is yours to keep.
