Around the World in Stories: Iceland's Sleeping Stone Giants

In Iceland, you can stand between two continents. Last week, Admin, we talked about the giant Gashadokuro skeletons of Japan. Iceland has its own giants… but they’re made of stone and sleep under blankets of moss. I went there once to see them for myself. The air felt different the moment I stepped outside. It was crisp, and clean, and it tasted of cold rock and distant snow. I was hiking near a place called Thingvellir, where the land is literally splitting apart. The ground hissed. Little puffs of steam escaped from cracks in the earth, like the whole island was breathing.

It felt like walking on a brand new planet. I walked for what felt like hours. The path wound through fields of old, black lava rock. The rocks were covered in a thick, green moss, so soft it looked like a velvet blanket. I was getting hungry, dreaming of finding a warm bowl of kjötsúpa—a hearty lamb soup—when the weather did what it does in Iceland. It changed. In a heartbeat. A thick, grey fog rolled in from the hills. It swallowed the path. It swallowed the mountains. Soon, I couldn't see more than a few feet in front of me.

The air grew cold and smelled of sulfur, like a giant matchstick had just been struck. My own footsteps sounded loud on the gravel. Too loud. Every rock started to look like a crouching figure. Some looked like faces, with long noses and deep-set eyes. Trolls, the stories say, caught by the morning sun and turned to stone forever. The hissing steam from the ground sounded like… whispering. I felt a prickle on my neck. The definite feeling of being watched. I told myself it was just the wind. But I was properly, truly lost.

I kept walking, calling out a soft "hello?" that the fog just ate up. And then… I saw it. A single, small light, glowing softly in the grey. It wasn't a house. It was a rock. A huge boulder, but with a tiny, perfectly carved wooden door set into its side. And beside the door, a little patch of garden with strange, beautiful flowers blooming in the cold. Oh. I knew, right then. I had stumbled upon the home of the Huldufólk. The hidden people. They live in the rocks, in the hills, invisible to most. I didn't knock.

You should NEVER disturb them. But I stood there for a moment, just looking. And as I watched, the fog began to thin, just a little. Enough to see a faint line in the moss. The path. It was right THERE. I knew it was a gift. A quiet bit of help. Before I left, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, shiny coin. I placed it carefully on the tiny doorstep, a thank you. Then I turned and followed the trail. I didn't look back until I was on the main road again. When I did, I couldn't see the boulder.

Or the door. Or the garden. It was just another mossy hill, same as all the others. But I knew what I saw. Some adventures, Admin, aren't about what you can prove. They're about what you choose to believe. And sometimes, if you look closely at the steam rising from the Icelandic earth, it almost looks like it's waving goodbye.
