The little creature flew straight to Leo's own front door. It darted inside and landed on a pile of dried corn husks on the kitchen table. His abuela was getting ready to make her famous tamales for the festival. And suddenly, Leo understood. His magic wasn't a loud performance. It wasn't a flashy craft.

It was the quiet rhythm of his family. It was the warmth of the kitchen. It was the smell of masa and spiced meat that he knew better than anyone. He looked at his grandmother, who smiled and handed him an apron. The Alebrije on the windowsill gave a little chirp, as if to say, "See?" and then, just as quickly as it appeared, it vanished. Leo spent the rest of the day with his hands covered in dough, folding corn husks just like his abuela taught him. He wasn't just making food.
