Sparkle the firefly tucked her wings in tight. Just last night, we heard how Glimmer the Dewdrop found magic in the morning sun. Well, Sparkle was about to find her own magic, under the light of the big, friendly moon. She was perched on the very tip of a long, swaying blade of grass. All around her, the night was alive with little lights. Her brothers and sisters, her cousins, her parents... they all danced in the soft, dark air. They were like tiny, floating stars, winking and blinking in a joyful ballet.

Her mother and father swooped by, their lights pulsing a gentle rhythm. "Come on, little one!" they called, their voices like soft music. "The air is warm and the moonflowers are opening!" But Sparkle's wings felt as stiff as dry leaves. And her little lantern, the one tucked at the end of her body, felt... sleepy. She tried to make it glow, she really did. She scrunched up her little firefly face and thought bright thoughts. But all she could manage was the faintest...

little... glimmer. It was barely a spark. She looked down from her grassy perch. The meadow looked like a huge, dark ocean. The flowers below were just dark shapes. What if she fell? What if her wings didn't work? What if her little light went out for good, and she was lost in the dark? A shiver went through her tiny body. "I can't," she whispered to a sleepy bumblebee humming on a clover blossom nearby. "I'm just not bright enough. My light is too small." The bumblebee just hummed a low, rumbly note, as if to say, "Just you wait." And just then, a soft, evening breeze came wandering through the meadow.

It smelled of sweet clover and cool earth. The breeze gave her blade of grass a gentle nudge. It began to sway, back and forth, back and forth. It felt like being rocked in a little green cradle. For a wonderful moment, Sparkle forgot to be scared. She was floating, without even trying. And deep inside, she felt a little flicker. It wasn't a scared flicker. It was a warm, hopeful flicker. A little pop of courage. She took a deep breath of the sweet, night air, closed her eyes, and took a tiny leap of faith.

She unfolded her wings. For a half-a-second, she dipped. But then... she caught the breeze. She was flying. She was really, truly flying! Her wobbly wings found their own rhythm. And as she flew, her little light blinked on. And oh! It wasn't faint anymore. It was a beautiful, brilliant, golden glow. It pulsed with the happy beat of her own little heart. She wasn't just a tiny bug in the dark. She was a lantern! A little flying star! She dipped and she soared. She drew golden circles in the air.

She danced with the moonbeams and played hide-and-seek with the other fireflies among the tall stalks of timothy grass. She discovered that when she was happy, her light grew even brighter. When she felt joyful, it shimmered like gold dust. After a long, wonderful dance, she began to feel a little sleepy. It was time to go home. And she realized her light did something else wonderful. It wasn't just for dancing. It was her very own map. It lit up the path right back to her cozy blade of grass.

Sparkle tucked herself under a soft leaf, her little lantern still glowing softly, a tiny, happy star in the big, quiet meadow. Her light wasn't small after all. It was exactly the right size to light up her own little world.
