In the summer of 1858, the British Parliament—the government running the largest empire the world had ever known—had to soak its curtains in chloride of lime just to get through the day. Why? Because the River Thames smelled so bad it was making them gag. Last episode we talked about an army being defeated by a flock of emus, which was absurd. But this is the rulers of a quarter of the globe being absolutely ROUTED by a smell. Here’s what was happening. London's population had exploded, more than doubling in fifty years to over two million people. And all of them were producing waste. For centuries, that waste went into over two hundred thousand brick-lined cesspits under the city. Gross, but contained.
Then came a new invention for the wealthy: the flush toilet. Suddenly, all that waste wasn't going into the pit in your basement. It was being piped directly into the city's old sewers, which were only ever designed for rainwater. And those sewers emptied straight into the Thames.
