In the summer of 1858, the British Parliament had to soak its curtains in chloride of lime just to get through the day. The stench from the River Thames—which was, by then, a literal open sewer—was so overpowering it threatened to shut down the government. But it has a secret. It's drowning in its own waste. For centuries, cesspits under houses were the norm. But with the popularization of the flush toilet, all that waste—for a population of two million people—was suddenly being piped directly into the city's ancient drains and, from there, straight into the Thames.
