They were trying to fight a war, not with an army, but with a smell. A stench so powerful, so physically overwhelming, it was bringing the most powerful city on Earth to its knees. This was the peak of what Londoners called The Great Stink. And it’s the moment a modern city was truly born. The problem had been building for decades. London’s population had exploded, from one million to nearly three million people. And all of their waste… went straight into the River Thames. The invention of the flush toilet, which was supposed to be a great leap forward in sanitation, actually made everything worse.

He wasn't just going to clean the Thames. He was going to build a second, hidden river system underneath the city. Eighty-two miles of massive, brick-lined intercepting sewers to catch the waste before it ever touched the river. He designed the tunnels with beautiful, almost church-like, brickwork.

And here is the genius part. When his engineers asked him what diameter the pipes should be, he calculated the needs for the current population… and then told them to double it. He was planning for a future he wouldn't even see. His foresight was so profound that his system served London for over one hundred and fifty years. Here’s the final turn. Everyone at the time believed in something called "miasma theory"—the idea that bad smells themselves caused disease.
