Pip’s pillow felt like a rock. Not since the Great Laughter Heist just last week had things felt this utterly, completely WRONG in Glimmerbrook. Pip sat up, rubbing their head. The pillow hadn't just felt like a rock, it WAS a rock. Cold, grey, and completely un-fluffy. And that was only the beginning. Pip tried to throw off their blanket, but they couldn't lift it. It was as heavy as a car! They had to roll out of bed and onto the floor just to escape. And the floor... the floor was bouncy, like a trampoline! Pip bounced once, twice, right over to their window. Outside, the sun was a black hole in the sky, and the shadows it cast were blindingly BRIGHT.
Something was very, very wrong. Pip tiptoed to the kitchen. Their favorite mug of morning hot chocolate was waiting. But when Pip touched it... ICE. It was frozen solid. The hot was cold, the soft was hard, the light was heavy. The entire world had turned inside out! Pip ran outside, bouncing on the spongy cobblestones. The river was flowing UPHILL. The birds were swimming in the air, flapping their wings like fins. It was chaos! Pip found Fizzwidget, the gnome in charge of Glimmerbrook’s magical core, pulling his beard in a panic. “It’s the Orb of Order!” he squeaked. “It’s gone… opposite! Everything it controls is doing the exact REVERSE of what it should!” He pointed a trembling finger at a giant, glowing sphere in the town square.
“I tried pushing the emergency shutdown button, but it just made the Orb glow MORE opposite!” Pip looked at Fizzwidget, who was frantically pushing a big red button labeled “OFF.” Every time he pushed, the black sun got darker and the bright shadows got brighter. And that’s when Pip had the idea. An idea so silly, so backwards, it just HAD to be right. “Fizzwidget, stop!” Pip shouted. “You’re doing it wrong!” Fizzwidget stopped, confused. “But it’s the OFF button!” he cried. “You PUSH an off button!” “Not today, you don’t,” Pip said, a grin spreading across their face. “Today, everything is the opposite. So if you want to turn it off...
you don’t push.” “You PULL.” Fizzwidget’s jaw dropped. Pull a button? That was impossible! But Pip didn’t hesitate. They marched right up to the panel, grabbed the edges of that big red button, and PULLED. It wouldn’t budge. They pulled harder. The whole panel groaned. And then… with a sound like a giant rubber band snapping… CLICK! The button popped OUT. Instantly, the world flooded with warm, golden light. The heavy blanket in Pip’s room became light as a feather. The stone pillow turned back into soft fluff. And the river… the river tumbled back down its hill with a happy sigh. Pip ran back to the kitchen, grabbed their mug, and felt the wonderful warmth of melted chocolate.
They took a long, slow sip. In a world that could turn upside down at any moment, a warm cup of hot chocolate felt like the most wonderful magic of all.
