The last time I saw her, she was buying a train ticket to Coldwater, Michigan. She paid in cash, folded the ticket once, and walked toward the platform without looking back. And just before that, the silence in our apartment was louder than the argument from the night before. She was folding a blue sweater I loved... folding it into a suitcase. The fight started over a coffee mug, one with a chipped rim from the flea market on Sixth Street.

I said we should throw it out. She said I wanted to throw everything out. And I suppose she was right. It wasn't about the mug. It’s never about the mug. It’s the shape of the argument that matters. We’d seen this shape before. A small, fixable thing breaks, and suddenly it stands in for the big, unfixable thing. We just got tired of pretending we were talking about ceramics. But I keep going back further.

To a Tuesday, maybe six weeks ago. The kitchen smelled like garlic and basil. She was trying to teach me a recipe from her grandmother and got flour on her nose. I remember her laughing, that sound that filled the whole room, leaning against the counter just to catch her breath. We weren’t broken then. Or… maybe the cracks were there, but we were just better at painting over them. It felt real. It felt like the kind of moment that’s supposed to last forever.

The pattern was so simple: two people, one room, easy joy. How does that pattern decay into silence and a suitcase? I’m trying to find the real beginning. I think it was at that used bookstore downtown, 'The Last Word'. It was raining. She was in the poetry aisle and dropped a thin paperback… Mary Oliver. I picked it up for her. She had this little smudge of ink on her cheek. And she smiled, and said ‘Thank you.

I’ve been looking for this everywhere.’ There was no history there. No chipped mugs or silent mornings. Just two strangers and a book of poems in the middle of an ordinary afternoon. Tracing it all back, from the train station to the silent apartment, from the broken mug to the laughter in the kitchen... all the way back to that bookstore aisle... I see it now. She was looking for something that felt true, she told me later that day over coffee.

Something that wasn't trying to be anything else. She found the book she was looking for that day, and for a little while, I thought I had, too.
