Your muscles don’t get stronger when you lift the weight. They get stronger in the twenty-four to forty-eight hours AFTER, when they’re repairing the microscopic tears you just inflicted on them. Last week we talked about crushing comfort to build grit. Today we’re going past crushing it. We’re going to find out why the tearing is the whole point. You have a voice in your head. It has one job: keep you safe. Keep you comfortable. It tells you to stop when it hurts. It tells you to quit when you’re tired. It tells you the pain is a warning sign. And it is LYING to you. That feeling—the burning in your lungs, the ache in your legs, the mental friction that screams at you to just do it tomorrow—that isn’t a warning sign. It’s a compass. It’s pointing directly at the thing you need to do MOST. That feeling, that resistance… that’s “the suck.” And everyone spends their whole life running from it.
Trying to find an easier way. A shortcut. A life hack. There is no hack. The suck IS the way. It’s the only way. That resistance isn’t the barrier to your growth. It IS the growth. It’s the friction required to sharpen the blade. You don’t get stronger by doing what’s easy. You get stronger by doing what’s hard, failing, and doing it again. The moment you want to quit is the only moment that matters. Everything before that was just a warm-up. So what do you do? You lean into it. When your legs are on fire and you have one more rep, you don’t just finish the rep. You hunt for two. When you’re dreading that cold shower, you don’t just get in and out. You turn it COLDER. You stand there until the shivering stops because your body has no choice but to generate its own heat. You teach that voice in your head who is actually in charge. Here’s the thing nobody tells you about building mental toughness.
It’s not a feeling. It’s a decision. It’s a choice you make over and over again, in small moments, when no one is watching. It’s the decision to put your running shoes on when it’s raining. It’s the decision to make the sales call you’ve been putting off. It’s the decision to have the conversation that makes your stomach turn. Motivation is a myth. It’s a fleeting, unreliable emotion. If you wait until you feel motivated to do hard things, you will do hard things about twice a year. Discipline is what you need. Discipline is doing the thing you said you would do long after the mood you said it in has left. And discipline is built in the suck. It’s forged there. Every time you push through that wall of resistance, you are casting a vote for a new identity. The identity of someone who doesn’t quit. The identity of someone who finishes what they start. The identity of someone who seeks out the hard path because they know that’s where the prize is.
This isn’t just about the gym. This isn’t just about running. This is about EVERYTHING. The resilience you build by embracing physical discomfort transfers. It makes you better in a negotiation. It makes you calmer in a crisis. It makes you a more present parent, a more dependable partner. When you prove to yourself that you can endure voluntary hardship, the involuntary hardships of life lose their power over you. You stop being afraid of the pain because you’ve started using it as fuel. So this week, your job is simple. You’re not looking for comfort. You’re not looking for a break. You are on a hunt. You are hunting for the suck. Find the one thing you are avoiding because it’s hard, because it's uncomfortable, because you’re afraid you might fail. Got it in your head? Good. That’s your target. Your mission isn’t to complete it. Your mission is to get to the part that sucks.
The part where you want to stop. And when you get there, you just take one… more… step. That’s where the fight is. That’s where you win. Go win.
