A good day is not a perfect day. A good day is one where you are on your own side. Last time, we worked on quieting that inner critic. Today, for our one hundredth time together, we’re going a step further. We are not just going to quiet that voice. We are going to give it a completely new job. Its old job was to be a judge — keeping a running tally of every mistake, every awkward moment, every time you fell short. Its only tool was a gavel. And it used it. Constantly. Today, you are firing the judge. And you are hiring a scout. The scout’s job is not to find your flaws.

Its job is to find where you are tender. Where you are tired. Its job is to report back, not with a verdict, but with a map. A map that shows you where you need to send reinforcements. Where you need to offer yourself a little more grace. So when that voice pipes up today about the email you sent with a typo, or the thing you wish you’d said differently in that meeting, you’re going to stop. And you’re going to ask it: “Okay, scout. What do you see?” And the answer isn’t “You’re an idiot.” The answer is, “Ah. You’re worried about how you’re perceived.

You’re feeling a little exposed.” And what do you do when you feel exposed? You don’t yell at yourself. You offer yourself some cover. A deep breath. A moment to stand up and stretch. A reminder that a single typo has never, in the history of the world, defined a person’s worth. You send in kindness. That is the scout’s purpose. Not to wound you, but to show you where you need to heal. Here is the second truth for today. You are a human being. Which means you are gloriously, stubbornly, and unavoidably imperfect. You will be messy. You will be awkward. You will have days where your brain feels like it’s running on three hours of sleep and bad coffee, because it IS.

You are allowed to have a body that gets tired. You are allowed to have a mind that forgets the word for that thing — you know, that thing. You are allowed to have a heart that gets it wrong sometimes. This is not a bug in your system. This is the system. The pressure to be polished, to be optimized, to be a seamless, frictionless productivity machine is a LIE. It’s a story someone sold you that was never, ever true. Your life is not a product to be perfected. It is a story to be lived. And stories need friction. They need mistakes. They need the character to get it wrong, dust themselves off, and try again, a little wiser this time.

So today, I want you to give yourself permission. Permission to be clumsy. Permission to not have the perfect answer. Permission to be visibly a work in progress. When you stumble — and you will — I want you to try saying this, right to yourself, with all the warmth you can muster: “And here we are. Being human again. Good.” It’s not an excuse. It’s an acceptance. This is the price of admission for a real, textured life. You don’t have to love your imperfections. But today, you can decide to stop fighting them. You can let them be part of the deal. Because they are.

You are not a project to be fixed. You are a person to be held. And the first person who needs to hold you, with compassion and with grace, is YOU. You do not earn compassion by getting everything right. You need compassion PRECISELY because you won’t. That’s the whole point. It’s not the prize at the finish line. It is the fuel in the tank. For today. For all the days. Go have a good day. The kind where you’re on your own side.
