That voice in your head, the one that’s relentlessly critical? It’s not a motivator. It’s a risk factor. Psychologists now see excessive self-criticism as one of the single clearest predictors of anxiety and depression. In our last episode on real affirmations, we talked about grounding yourself in what’s true. Today, we use that same practice to turn toward that inner critic—not with a fight, but with a different kind of strength. The biggest lie it tells you is that it’s necessary for success. That without it, you’d be lazy.
Weak. That’s just not true. Researchers like Susan David have shown that people who practice self-compassion aim just as high as self-critical people. The only difference? They don't fall apart when they miss. They learn, and they get back up, without the shame spiral. So today, you’re not going to try to silence that voice. You’re just going to offer a different one. A quieter one, maybe. But a truer one. Find a space where you can breathe for a minute. You can say these affirmations out loud, or just let the words land internally.
The point isn't to force belief. It's just to offer a different possibility. Let’s begin. When I stumble or fall short, I will remind myself that this is part of being human. It is not a failure of my worth. I am learning and I am growing. Even when that progress feels slow. Even when it feels imperfect. It IS progress. My worth is not defined by my mistakes. It’s not defined by my setbacks. It is defined by my courage to keep trying, right now, in this moment. I will offer myself the same patience and kindness that I would give to a dear friend who was facing this exact same challenge.
I recognize that everyone struggles. Everyone feels this way sometimes. This feeling doesn’t isolate me; it connects me to a shared human experience of imperfection. I am not alone in this. It’s okay to feel vulnerable. It’s okay to feel uncertain. These feelings are not weakness. They do not diminish my strength or my value. Let this next one really land. I am enough. Just as I am. Right now. With all my flaws, all my history, all my complexities. I am enough. And because of that, each day—starting with today—I choose compassion over criticism.
I am creating space for my own healing. I am creating space for my own growth. That’s the work. It’s not about winning an argument with yourself. It’s not about pretending the negative voice doesn’t exist. It’s about building a different instinct. A reflex of self-kindness that gets stronger every time you use it. You’re not erasing the critic. You’re just turning down its volume by turning up the volume on a voice that is fundamentally on your side. The voice of compassion is the voice of resilience. It’s what allows you to bend without breaking, to fail without becoming a failure.
Self-criticism is loud, but it’s brittle. It shatters under pressure. Self-compassion is quiet, but it is durable. It is the foundation you can ALWAYS return to. Today, you laid one more stone.
