The company that made the online game Glitch failed so completely it had to shut down in 2012. The internal chat tool the team built to coordinate that failure became Slack. In our last episode, we talked about finding strength in imperfection; today we’re looking at the proof. We’re looking at how the end of one thing is often the only way to begin the thing that actually matters. You’re facing something difficult right now. A setback. A rejection. A door that just slammed shut. And the story you’re telling yourself is that you failed. That you lost. Here’s a different story. A truer one. The first thing to hold onto today is this: This setback is not the end.

It is the raw material for what comes next. When the game Glitch was dying, its founders didn't see a billion-dollar chat application. They saw four years of work evaporating. They saw failure. But buried inside that failure was a tool they had built just for themselves. A better way to communicate. It was an afterthought. A piece of scaffolding they were about to throw away with the rest of the project. But it was the whole point. They just couldn't see it yet. Right now, in the wreckage of what you thought you were building, there is a tool. A skill. An insight. Something you forged in the fire that has more value than the entire project you just lost.

Your job today is not to mourn what’s gone. It’s to sift through the rubble and find the thing you can carry forward. The thing that worked. The piece of it that was TRUE. Say it with me. This setback is not the end. It is the raw material for what comes next. The second thing. You feel like you’re falling behind. You look around and see other people moving forward, hitting their marks, celebrating wins. And you are here. Standing still. Picking up pieces. The feeling is real. The conclusion is false. Frank McCourt was a teacher in New York City for thirty years. He was broke. He was unpublished. He started writing his first book, Angela's Ashes, after he retired.

He was sixty-six years old when it was published and won the Pulitzer Prize. Was he thirty years behind? Or did he need every one of those thirty years to have something to say? Your pace is not their pace. There is no universal schedule for a life. The time you’re spending right now—recovering, reassessing, rebuilding—is not wasted time. It is foundational. You are building the base of the mountain. It doesn’t look like you’re climbing, but you are going deeper, so you can eventually go higher. Comparison is the poison. It tells you that your journey should look like someone else’s highlight reel.

It won’t. It can’t. So the next affirmation is this: I am not behind. I am on my own time. This part of the journey is necessary. One more. This one is the hardest, but it’s the most important. The setback hurt. It cost you something. Time, money, confidence. Maybe all three. And the temptation is to wish it away. To think, "If only that hadn't happened." But that pain purchased something for you. It bought you knowledge you could not have acquired any other way. You can read a hundred books about why a business fails, but you only understand it when your own business fails. You can listen to podcasts about resilience, but you only learn it when you have no choice but to get back up.

This knowledge is EARNED. It’s not theoretical. It’s branded into you. And because you paid for it so dearly, you will never forget it. This is the wisdom that will keep you from making the same mistake again. It's the scar tissue that makes you stronger in that exact spot. You didn't just survive it. You graduated from it. So the final truth for today is this: This hurt, and I learned. I have earned this knowledge, and it makes me stronger for what is ahead. The world tells you to avoid failure at all costs. To show no weakness. To present an unbroken, perfect surface to everyone you meet. That is a lie.

A setback is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that you were trying to do something difficult. Success gives you a trophy. A setback gives you a map. It shows you where the dead ends are, where the ground is soft, where the monsters hide. Today, you are not weaker because you stumbled. You are not less than because something broke. You are a cartographer. You have just charted a new and dangerous part of the world. And that map is the most valuable thing you own.
