for most of the twentieth century scientists believed the adult brain was fixed we know now it rewires itself every single day based on what you do what you think and what you try in our last episode on imperfect mornings we talked about the power of just starting over even when you feel behind today is about what happens next it's about the work itself the learning the adapting the part where it gets messy so here are five things to hold onto today as you do the work first my effort is the point not the outcome you can't control the result you can't control how people react or what the market does or if the code will

compile on the first try you only control the attempt that attempt is what rewires your brain that attempt is the signal you send to yourself that you are capable of tackling hard things so when you find your mind fixated on whether this will work pull it back gently the work is showing up the work is making the call the work is writing the first paragraph the win for this moment is the effort itself that's the one thing that is 100% yours second this isn't a mistake this is data you thought the answer was a turns out it was b that discovery is not a failure it is new information that you did not have before

you just ran an experiment and got a conclusive result most people call that a setback but you can call it what it is learning you are now smarter than you were five minutes ago you have eliminated one wrong path which makes finding the right one more likely so don't say i was wrong say okay good to know this isn't an emotional event it's just data collect it use it and move on to the next experiment third the plan was a guess my ability to adapt is the skill no plan survives contact with reality you knew that going in the purpose of a plan isn't to predict the future it's to give you a starting point

a direction to walk in but the moment you start walking you get new information you see the terrain you feel the wind sticking to the original plan when the facts on the ground have changed isn't discipline it's stubbornness the real skill is not making a perfect plan it's your ability to pivot without shame to see a new better path and have the courage to take it today honor your ability to adapt that is your true strength fourth i am building something i can't see yet when you learn a new language you stumble over words for weeks it feels impossible but underneath the surface your brain is building connections when you start a new project the

first few weeks can feel like you're going nowhere just meetings and questions and dead ends but you're building context you're building relationships you're building a foundation progress is not always linear it is not always visible some of the most important work happens in the quiet unseen moments of struggle trust that the effort is compounding you are building capacity resilience and understanding even when it feels like you're standing still you're not and fifth i will find the value in whatever this becomes maybe this project doesn't end with the promotion you wanted maybe it teaches you a skill that lands you a better job somewhere else six months from now maybe this difficult conversation doesn't save the

relationship but it teaches you how to stand up for yourself in a way you never have before you go in with a goal but you cannot know the true gift this experience has for you be open to it the outcome you plan for is only one of the possible good things that can happen your job is to do the work with integrity and then when it's done to look at what it gave you the lesson the strength the clarity the value is always there you just have to be willing to see it
