Your brain processes harsh self-criticism using the exact same pathways it uses for a physical threat. It triggers cortisol. It activates your fight-or-flight system. Self-compassion does the opposite. It releases oxytocin and activates the part of your brain wired for caregiving and safety. You can literally choose to soothe your nervous system instead of attacking it. That’s the work we’re doing today, continuing our practice of grounded affirmations. This isn’t about pretending.
It’s about choosing a different response. Let’s start right there. Take a breath. And say this with me, feeling the truth of it in your body. My mistakes are not evidence of my failure. They are evidence that I am trying. Think about one thing from yesterday you’re still replaying. That email with the typo. The awkward thing you said in a meeting. The promise you made to yourself that you broke. You’re holding it like a hot coal. Now, see it for what it is. Not a verdict on your worth, but a data point.
Proof of action. Proof of life. You are in the arena. Of course you will stumble. Say it again, this time with a little more gentleness. My mistakes are evidence that I am trying. Now for the next one. This is for the difficult feelings. The anxiety that lives in your chest. The sadness that feels like a heavy blanket. This feeling is a messenger. I will listen to its message without becoming the feeling itself. You are not your anxiety. You are not your sadness. You are the one experiencing it.
You are the sky, and the feeling is a cloud passing through. You don't have to fight it or fix it or force it to leave. You can just... notice it. Hello, fear. I see you. What are you here to tell me? You can offer it a seat, listen to what it needs, and trust that it will eventually move on. It always does. You are the constant. The feeling is the variable. Okay, one last one. This is the most important. I will offer myself the same grace I give to the people I love. Think of a friend who called you, completely distraught.
They messed up at work. They feel like an impostor, a failure. What would you say to them? You wouldn't list their faults. You wouldn't tell them to just get over it. You’d say, "Of course that was hard. You’re doing so much. It's okay to have an off day." You’d meet their pain with warmth. You deserve that same voice. You deserve that same immediate, unconditional defense. So today, when that inner critic starts its monologue, you cut it off. You become your own best friend. This isn’t about earning your own kindness.
It’s about remembering it was yours all along.
