Here’s a truth from the anthropologist Rick Potts: humans are the world's most adaptable species. In episode one-forty we talked about affirmations grounded in reality. Today, the reality is you are built for this. You are designed to survive the rainforest and the arctic, the good times and the bad. You are designed to adapt. So let’s start there. With the facts. The first fact is that what you’re going through is not an exception. It’s the rule. Researcher Bruce Feiler found that most people go through a major life transition — a lifequake — every twelve to eighteen months. A new job, a new city, a new relationship, a new loss.
Every year or so, the ground shifts. Sometimes you choose it. About half the time, it chooses you. So if you feel like everything is in motion, you’re not wrong. You’re just awake. This is not a detour. This IS the path. The first affirmation is simply this: This is normal. This rhythm of change is the human rhythm. You are right on schedule. Here’s the second fact. These transitions follow a map. Feiler breaks it down into three parts. The Long Goodbye. The Messy Middle. And The New Beginning. You need to know which part you’re in. The Long Goodbye is the stage of letting go. It’s the mourning for what was, even if what was wasn't working.
You can’t get to the new beginning until you’ve said a proper goodbye to the past. So say it. Your next affirmation: It is okay to grieve what I’m leaving behind. This isn't weakness. It’s the work. Then comes The Messy Middle. This is the hardest part. It's the space between who you were and who you will be. The old rules don't apply, and the new ones aren't written yet. Neuroscience research from the Learning Guild shows us why this feels so bad: uncertainty triggers a threat response in your brain. It literally reduces your ability to think clearly. You are not imagining the fog. Your biology is trying to protect you from a predator that isn’t there.
So the affirmation for the middle is the most important one: This discomfort is the signal of growth. This is my brain rewiring itself. I will be kind to myself in the mess, because the mess is where I am becoming. And then, slowly, you find The New Beginning. It doesn’t arrive with a lightning bolt. It arrives in small steps. A routine you start to keep. A moment of quiet you didn’t have to fight for. A decision that feels like your own. This brings us to the final fact. The one that changes everything. Resilience isn't about bouncing BACK. You will never be the person you were before this started.
And that is the entire point. As Psychology Today puts it, real resilience is about bouncing FORWARD. It’s about using the force of the impact to launch you to a new place, stronger and more capable than before. You are not trying to recover what was lost. You are building something new from the pieces. You are not just surviving this. You are allowing it to change you. This hardship is not an obstacle to your life. It is the raw material. So the final affirmation is a choice. Change is hard. But as one psychologist noted, staying the same is also hard. You are already doing the hard work. The only question is which direction it takes you.
You are the most adaptable species on earth. You are in the middle of a transition that happens to everyone. You are feeling exactly what someone in your position is supposed to feel. And you are not bouncing back. You are bouncing FORWARD. Do it before you're ready.
