The oldest surviving pieces of kintsugi date back to the fifteenth century. That’s over five hundred years of people practicing the same idea. In our last conversation, we talked about how you are built to adapt. Kintsugi is that idea, made physical—the art of repairing what’s broken with gold, making the object STRONGER and more beautiful for having been cracked. Today, you stop hiding the cracks. Today, you’re going to see them as proof of life. So here’s your briefing. Five grounded affirmations for the day ahead. Not platitudes. Tools. Let them sink in. First. My mistakes do not define me; they refine me.
You’re going to misstep today. Or you’re going to be thinking about a misstep from yesterday. That’s a given. But a mistake is just data. It’s an algorithm finding a dead end and turning around. It’s a designer’s first prototype, the one that’s supposed to fail so the second one can work. Your mistake is not a final judgment on your character or your ability. It is a signpost. It is the raw material for your next, better attempt. Look at the error, whatever it is. See the data it gave you. That information is the price of tuition, and you just paid it. Now use what you learned.
That is refinement. That is forward motion. Second. My worth is not conditional on my performance. You are not a stock price. Your value doesn't fluctuate based on your daily productivity, your social wins, or the number of tasks you check off a list. Those things are what you DO, not who you ARE. Your inherent worth was locked in from the start. It’s the baseline. It’s non-negotiable. Some days you will operate at peak capacity. Other days, you will barely get by. Your performance will vary. That’s human. But your value? That remains constant. Hold onto that. When you feel yourself starting to tie your self-esteem to an outcome—a successful meeting, a finished project, a perfect conversation—cut the cord.
Your worth was never on the table. Third. I will treat myself with the same compassion I would offer a friend. Think about it. A friend comes to you, hurting, having made a mistake. What do you do? You don’t list their failures. You don’t tell them they’re useless. You listen. You validate their struggle. You remind them of their strengths. You offer perspective. You are an expert at offering grace to others. Today, you turn that expertise inward. The critical voice in your head—the one that’s so quick to judge—is not your friend. It’s a bad habit. You can break it. When you hear it start, stop.
And ask yourself: What would I say to a friend right now? Then say that, and ONLY that, to yourself. Fourth. I have permission to be a work in progress. There is no "finished" version of you. There is no final draft. This idea that you’re supposed to arrive at some state of permanent perfection is the biggest lie there is. You are a living system, constantly updating. You are learning, changing, evolving, every single day. That is the point. To be a work in progress is to be alive. To be finished is to be a statue. So give yourself permission. Permission to not know the answer.
Permission to change your mind. Permission to be awkward and uncertain as you learn a new skill. You are not failing. You are building. And building is messy. Fifth. My strength is in my willingness to begin again. Resilience isn't about having an unbreakable outer shell. That’s brittleness. True strength is flexible. It’s the capacity to feel the impact, to fall, to break, and then to consciously, deliberately, choose to get back up. Every moment is a new chance to do that. Had a rough morning? The afternoon can be different. Snapped at someone? You can apologize. Procrastinated all day?
You can start now, for ten minutes. Your power isn’t in having a perfect, unbroken streak. Your REAL power is in your infinite capacity to reset. To take a breath. And begin again. Right now. That’s it. That’s the work for today. Not to be flawless. Not to be perfect. Just to see the gold in the cracks. Perfection was never the point. Being whole is.
