Harvard researchers found that for high-achieving students, perfectionism doesn’t just hurt their grades—it actively makes their work worse. In our last episode, we talked about finding morning affirmations that feel true because they’re grounded in your real life. Today, we’re going to find the words for something that feels impossible: giving yourself permission to be gloriously, beautifully, and productively imperfect. Because the drive for perfection isn’t really about a desire for success.

For most of us, it’s a deep, paralyzing fear of failure. It’s the voice that says, “If I can’t do it perfectly, I won’t do it at all.” And that voice is a liar. It keeps you on the sidelines. It keeps you safe, and small, and stuck. So today, we’re going to talk back. Here are five affirmations to embrace the mess. To celebrate the process. To get you moving. Say them. Feel them. Let them be true. First. I made a mistake, and that is proof I am trying. Say it again. I made a mistake, and that is proof I am trying.

This isn’t an excuse. It’s a reframe. A mistake isn’t a judgment on your character. It’s a data point. It’s the sign you’re in the arena, getting your hands dirty. People who never make mistakes are the ones who never try anything new. Your error means you took a risk. It means you were brave enough to show up and do the work. It’s not a failure. It’s the cost of admission for a life of growth. Second. My only job today is to take the next small step. That’s it. You don’t have to build the entire cathedral today.

You just have to lay one brick. Perfectionism tricks you into staring at the massive, finished product. It overwhelms you with the sheer distance between here and there. But you can’t live in “there.” You can only live right here, right now. So forget the summit. Forget the finish line. Just look down at your feet. What is the very next step you can take? That’s your whole world right now. Do that one thing. Third. I am running my own race, on my own timeline. Comparison is the thief of joy, and in the age of social media, it’s a professional cat burglar.

You see someone else’s polished success, their perfect outcome, and you feel like you’re falling behind. But you are only seeing their highlight reel. You’re not seeing the years of doubt, the wrong turns, the messy first drafts. You’re not seeing the chaos. Your path is not supposed to look like theirs. It’s yours. The twists, the detours, the pauses… they are all part of your unique story. Stay in your lane. Your pace is the only one that matters. Fourth. Today is not a measure of my worth. It’s just a day.

Some days, you just don’t have it. You feel slow, uninspired, clumsy. The perfectionist inside you screams that this is a catastrophe. A sign that you’ve lost your edge. It’s not. It’s just a Tuesday. Or a Friday. It’s one day out of thousands. You are not your productivity. You are not your best day, and you are certainly not your worst day. An off day is just your body and mind telling you to rest. It isn't a verdict on your entire existence. Let it be what it is: just a day. It will pass. And finally, number five.

This is not finished, but it is further than I was yesterday. This is the heart of it all. In Japan, there’s a concept called wabi sabi. It’s about finding beauty in things that are imperfect, incomplete, and impermanent. A chipped teacup is more beautiful because of its history. Your work—your life—is the same. That project that isn’t done yet? That skill you haven’t mastered? It’s beautiful right now. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s in process. It shows you’re growing. You are further along than when you started.

And that is always, always something to celebrate. You are not aiming for a flawless, finished statue on a pedestal. That’s a monument. It’s cold, and it’s done. You are the clay on the potter’s wheel. Still turning. Still being shaped. The fingerprints and the slight imbalances aren’t flaws. They are the marks of the hands that are making you. They are the story of your creation. And that story is happening right now. Let it be imperfect. Let it be real.
