Your brain is producing around seven hundred new neurons a day, right now. Most of them in a part of your brain called the hippocampus, the very center of learning and memory. In our last episode, we talked about embracing productive imperfection—and today, we’re applying that idea to the one place where imperfection is the entire point: learning something new. So let’s begin there. With that brain of yours. It is not a finished product. It is not a static object you carry around in your head. It is a living, evolving network. And your first affirmation today is a biological fact.

Say it with me. My brain is built to change. Those new neurons being born in your hippocampus? They are like new hires on their first day. They are looking for a job. When you challenge yourself, when you pick up that book or listen to that lecture or try that new recipe… you are giving them a job. You are telling them where to go. You are inviting them to plug into the existing network and make it stronger, faster, and more resilient. MRI studies show this. People who actively learn have measurably more brain volume. You are not just thinking new thoughts. You are physically building a new brain.

Every time you stumble, every time you have to look something up again, you are strengthening a connection. You are turning a faint trail in the woods into a highway. So when you feel that resistance, know that it’s the feeling of construction. It’s the feeling of growth. This brings us to the second truth. The feeling of effort is a sign of success, not failure. It’s supposed to feel hard. Margaret Beier, a researcher at Rice University, notes that learning feels more effortful as we age. And that feeling can crush our motivation. We think, “This is too hard.

I’m too old. I’m not smart enough.” We mistake the friction for a stop sign. It’s not a stop sign. It’s a sign that the work is getting done. So here is your next affirmation. Say it like you mean it. This feeling of effort is the feeling of my brain rewiring itself. It’s true. That moment of frustration where you can’t find the word? That’s your brain searching for a new neural pathway. That feeling of clumsiness with a new skill? That’s your body and mind creating new muscle memory from scratch. The discomfort is the point. Psychologist Holly Connors says a growth mindset isn’t about believing you can do anything.

It’s about staying open to learning—even when it feels slow or uncertain. So don’t run from that feeling. Welcome it. Name it. “Ah. There it is. That’s the feeling of getting smarter.” It’s not a bug. It’s the main feature. Finally, the most important piece. It’s not your talent. It’s not your age. It’s your belief. The single greatest predictor of whether you will learn something new is your self-efficacy. Your belief in your own ability to figure it out. This isn’t just a nice idea. It’s neuroscience. When you affirm your ability to grow, you are not just thinking a positive thought.

You are activating the reward pathways in your brain. You are giving yourself a little hit of dopamine that tells your nervous system, “Pay attention. This is important. Keep going.” Your belief is the fuel for neuroplasticity. So this is your final affirmation for today. It is the one that makes all the others possible. I am capable of learning what matters to me. Say it again. I am capable of learning what matters to me. It’s not about being a genius. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about giving yourself permission to be a beginner. It’s about trusting that the organ in your skull is designed for this exact process.

It has been doing it since the day you were born, and it has not forgotten how. Today, when you face that difficult thing… that piece of software, that new language, that challenging conversation… remember what is happening under the surface. You are not just trying. You are not just hoping. You are actively participating in the architecture of your own mind. You are sculpting your own intellect. The goal was never to arrive, already knowing. The goal is to be in motion. To be in the process of becoming. And that is a process you were born to do.
