Your brain processes a gut feeling in less than a quarter of a second. A fully reasoned, conscious thought can take two or three times that long. In episode one-nineteen we talked about finding real patience—today is about what you do with the space that patience gives you. You listen. You listen to that first, fast signal before the doubt rolls in. Before the committee of other people’s opinions starts its meeting in your head. Today is about trusting that signal. About making the choice and not looking back. Here are five affirmations to help you do just that.
Say them with me, or just let them land. First. For when you’ve been staring at two options for so long they’ve started to blur. The job offer in the city, the one closer to home. The blue shirt, the white shirt. The decision has become a mountain, but it started as a molehill. This is for that moment. My first instinct is valuable information. It is the purest signal I will get. I honor it, even if I choose to gather more data. I will not let overthinking drown out my own wisdom. Second. For when everyone has an opinion. Your parents, your partner, your boss, that person on the internet you’ve never even met.
They all know what you SHOULD do. Their voices are loud, and yours feels... quiet. Too quiet. This is for reclaiming your own sound. I am the only expert on my own life. I am grateful for the input of those who care for me, but I am not bound by their expectations. The final vote belongs to me. ALWAYS. Third. This one is for the fear. The big one. The fear of getting it wrong. Of choosing a path that leads to regret, or failure, or a dead end. The paralysis that comes from wanting a guarantee that the universe simply does not offer. There is no wrong path, only a different one.
I am resourceful enough to handle any outcome. I trust my ability to adapt, to learn, and to begin again if I must. This choice is a step, not a sentence. Fourth. You’re waiting for certainty. That lightning bolt of absolute, one-hundred-percent knowing. You're waiting to feel ready. But the feeling isn't coming. The fear is still there. The doubt is still a little voice in the background. This is for moving before you feel ready. Clarity is not the absence of fear. Clarity is the quiet resolve to move forward anyway. I do not need absolute certainty to take the next right step.
I only need to be willing. And finally, number five. For the rearview mirror. For the ghost of a past decision that you keep re-litigating in your mind. The "what if I had..." and the "if only I'd known..." that steal your energy from the present. This is for putting that ghost to rest. I made the best choice I could with what I knew then. I forgive myself for not knowing what I know now. My power is not in the past—it is here. It is now. It is in the very next choice I make. You’ve been standing in the hallway long enough. A hallway of open doors, endless possibilities.
And it feels like freedom, but it’s not. It’s limbo. A decision isn't a lock. It’s not about closing doors and losing options. A decision is a key. It’s the one thing that turns the world from a hallway of maybes into a room you can actually live in. A place you can furnish, and paint, and make your own. You have the key. You’ve had it all along. Use it.
