A new study from Arizona State University just confirmed that parents who practice self-compassion show fewer signs of depression, even when living under the intense stress of poverty. In our last episode, we talked about grounding your affirmations in science. Today, we’re going to give you the words. These aren't wishes. These are statements of fact, built on what we now know about how your mind actually works. So take a breath. Let these land. Here is the first one. For when you make a mistake.

This mistake does not mean that I am broken. It means that I am trying. My brain is not built to respond to shame. It is built to respond to information. And this—this feeling, this outcome—is just information. It is not a threat. It is a lesson, and I am a student who is ready to learn. Here is the second. For when you feel alone in your failure. I am not the only one who feels this way. Right now, in this moment, someone I admire is also struggling. Someone I respect is also facing their own imperfection.

This feeling does not isolate me. It connects me to the shared, human truth that we are all beautifully, profoundly, imperfect. This is our common ground. Here is the third. For the critic in your head. To the part of me that is shouting right now. The part that is so harsh, so critical. I hear you. I know you think you are protecting me. I know you think this is motivation. But if self-criticism actually worked… it would have worked by now. Your strategy has been tested for years, and it has failed.

Today, I am choosing a different way. I am choosing kindness not because it’s soft, but because it’s effective. This is the fourth. For the high-achiever in you that thinks compassion is an excuse. My compassion for myself is not a hall pass. It is fuel. It is the solid ground that allows me to get back up after I fall. It is the engine that lets me set high standards, and aim for them again and again, without the crushing weight of shame. High-achievers don't use self-criticism.

They use self-compassion to stay in the game. It is the tool of the resilient. Number five. For when you need to take responsibility. Because I am building a safe place inside myself, I can finally be honest. I can look at my actions clearly, without crumbling. I can see where I went wrong. I can feel the regret without letting it define me. This internal safety is what gives me the strength to say “I was wrong” and mean it. It is the foundation of integrity. This is the sixth.

This one is about your body. With this single kind thought, I am changing my brain. Right now. I am literally activating the neural pathways for empathy and deactivating the pathways for threat. This is not just a mental exercise. This is a physical act. I can feel the shift. From the clenched jaw of inhibition to the open posture of awareness. I am giving my nervous system a safe place to land. And finally, number seven. For right now. For the next step. My worth was never in question.

Only my strategy was. Today, my strategy is kindness. It is clarity. It is the courage to be human. And from this place, I can begin. You’ve spent years listening to the inner critic. It promised you growth and gave you anxiety. It promised improvement and gave you shame. That voice is loud because it is afraid. It thinks that if it stops yelling, you will stop trying. The research is now clear. The opposite is true. The critic in your head promises you'll be better tomorrow.

The compassion in your heart makes you stronger today.
