Research published in the journal Nature just confirmed that your brain’s motor circuits—the parts that move your body—are deeply integrated with cognitive control and emotion. In Episode 61, we talked about finding real words for real courage. Today, we’re putting those words to work, because the science is now clear: your body and your mind are not just connected, they are one system. And when that system gets overwhelmed, it can feel like you’re drowning. Overwhelm isn’t just stress.

It’s a physiological state. It’s a cortisol surge that floods your body, cranking up anxiety. It’s a serotonin dip that leaves you feeling hopeless, stuck. Psychologists call it psychological paralysis. The feeling of being frozen. Your sympathetic nervous system is screaming “fight or flight,” but there’s nothing to fight and nowhere to run. So you just… stop. Your to-do list feels like a threat. Your inbox feels like an attack. Your own thoughts feel like they’re turning on you.

And in that moment, a generic platitude like “stay positive” is not just useless, it’s insulting. It ignores the reality of the storm you’re in. So let’s not do that. Let’s get real. Let’s find the words that honor the feeling, and then gently, firmly, guide you back to solid ground. Take a breath. Let’s try this. When you feel the paralysis of a thousand tasks, when looking at your list makes you want to hide… I want you to put your hand on your heart. Feel it beating.

And say this with me. My capacity is not infinite, and that is not a failure. It is a fact. Today, I will not try to boil the ocean. I will not try to do it all. I will choose one thing. Just one. And I will give it my attention. Finishing one thing is better than staring at twenty. I am choosing focus over panic. When the overwhelm isn’t about tasks, but about feelings… a wave of grief, a surge of fear, a painful memory that ambushes you. When your chest gets tight and your breath gets shallow… I want you to stop trying to push it away.

You can’t fight a wave. You have to let it pass through you. Breathe deep into your belly. A four-second inhale. A six-second exhale. That breath is a signal to your parasympathetic nervous system. It’s the biological command for ‘calm.’ Now, say this. This feeling is immense, and I am making space for it. I will not be swept away. I am the shore and this feeling is the tide. It will rise, and it will recede. I can feel this without becoming this. I am breathing through it, and I am safe.

And when the overwhelm brings its cruelest friend, self-doubt. When that voice starts whispering that you’re not good enough, that you’re going to be found out, that you can’t handle this… That’s the cortisol talking. Not you. It’s a chemical lie designed to make you small. We’re not going to let it. Think of one time—just one—that you did something difficult. Something you were proud of. Hold that memory. Feel it in your body. Now, say this. I have been in the storm before.

I have navigated difficult waters and found my way. My history is proof of my resilience. This feeling of doubt is a temporary weather pattern, not a permanent part of my climate. I have done hard things, and I can do this hard thing. I trust the person who got me this far. That feeling of being overwhelmed… that frozen, drowning sensation… it’s not a malfunction. It’s a feature. It’s your mind and body, perfectly intertwined, sending you a signal. A very loud, very clear signal that you have reached a limit.

That you need rest. That you need compassion. That you need a different approach. Your only job in that moment is to listen. Not to the panic, but to the message underneath it. The message is simple: “Take care of me.” And you can. You always can. That power is never truly lost. It just gets quiet. Listen for it.
