Your brain responds to uncertainty by flooding your system with cortisol and adrenaline. It’s a biological alarm bell, pulled by a part of your brain called the amygdala, designed to scream DANGER when the path ahead is unclear. Last week, in episode forty-nine, we talked about turning those morning nerves into real belief. Today, we’re going right to the source of that feeling. We’re talking about the uncertainty itself. This isn’t a flaw in your character. It’s a feature of your biology. That feeling right now… that flutter in your stomach, the heat rising in your neck, the sudden, intense urge to either run a marathon or hide under a blanket.

That’s your amygdala doing its job. It’s your ancient survival system screaming ‘threat!’ about a future you can’t predict. It’s a beautifully designed system for a world of saber-toothed tigers. It is a less helpful system for an unanswered text or a big meeting tomorrow. So the first thing to know is this: That physical feeling is a signal, not a sentence. It’s your body trying to keep you safe. You can thank it for the warning, feel the cortisol humming in your veins, and gently remind it that you are not, in fact, being chased by a predator. You are just standing at the edge of something new.

This feeling is not a verdict on your ability. It is simply the energy of anticipation. The second thing to know is that you are built to regulate this feeling. You have more than one gear. Deep inside you, the vagus nerve connects your brain to your gut, your heart, your lungs. Polyvagal Theory explains this as a kind of traffic light for your nervous system. There's the green light state: calm, connected, creative. You feel safe, you can engage with people, you can solve problems. Then there's the yellow light: fight or flight. The engine is revving. You're mobilized, anxious, ready for action.

And then there's the red light: a total shutdown, the freeze response. The beautiful part is this: you are not just a passenger. You have influence. That long, slow exhale you’re about to take? That’s you, consciously telling your vagus nerve to shift gears. You are actively moving your system from the yellow light of anxiety back toward the green light of calm. You are not broken for feeling the alarm. You are powerful because you can learn to quiet it. You’ve done it before. You can do it right now. This is a skill you are building, one breath at a time. Finally, your brain is a prediction machine.

It HATES a blank page. So it starts writing stories. Dr. Rue Wilson at Harvard calls this “toxic time travel.” Your mind tries to feel in control by imagining every possible outcome, and because anxiety is such a powerful emotion, those stories almost always become catastrophic. You aren't just thinking about what could happen. You are emotionally living through the worst-case scenario, over and over again. MIT neuroscientists found that your prefrontal cortex—the logical part of your brain—wants to solve the puzzle. But another part, the thalamus, is just checking the signal strength.

It’s asking, “is this information even reliable?” When the future is uncertain, the signal is pure static. And that static sends your whole system into overdrive. So here is your job. Your job is not to predict the future. Your job is not to win the argument with your anxiety. Your job is to unplug from the toxic time travel. Your job is to be right here. Feel your feet on the floor. Notice the air in this room. That phone call you have to make, that conversation you have to have, that project you have to start… it is not happening right now. Right now, you are just here.

Breathing. This moment is the only thing you have to work with. And it is enough. Every time you sit with this feeling of uncertainty and choose not to spiral… every time you take a breath and anchor yourself in the present instead of catastrophizing the future… you are doing something profound. You are literally rewiring your brain. You are teaching your amygdala a new lesson. You are carving a new neural pathway for calm. This isn’t just a nice thought. This is neuroscience. You are building resilience, one uncertain moment at a time. You are becoming someone who can stand in the mystery.

Not without fear, but with courage. And that changes everything.
