Psychologists have a name for what happens after a crisis: post-traumatic growth. A majority of people who go through hell don't just survive it — they report becoming stronger, with a deeper appreciation for life on the other side. In episode one-oh-three, we talked about being beautifully unfinished. Today is about the tools you use on the days that feel less beautiful and more… unfinished. Today is for the hard day. The one you’re looking at right now. Here are five truths to carry with you. Not wishes. Not hopes. Truths. First. Your fear is a compass, not a stop sign.
That feeling in your gut, the one that’s making your hands sweat? That’s not a warning to retreat. It’s a signal that you’re standing at the edge of your comfort zone. It means you’re facing something that MATTERS. It means you’re about to grow. Most people mistake that feeling for a red light. You will not. You will see it for what it is: a sign pointing directly toward the thing you need to do next. It’s not telling you that you’re in danger. It’s telling you that you’re alive. Second. You have a one hundred percent success rate at surviving your worst days.
Think about it. Every single terrible, awful, no-good day you have ever had… you made it through. Every heartbreak, every failure, every moment you thought you would break. You are still here. That is not an opinion. That is data. Your own personal, unimpeachable track record of resilience. So when your brain starts telling you that this time is different, that this is the one that will finally take you down… you can look it square in the eye and present the evidence. The evidence is you. You are the proof. Third. This feeling is temporary. This action is permanent.
The anxiety, the dread, the overwhelm… it feels all-consuming. It feels like it will last forever. It will not. No feeling does. It’s a chemical weather pattern passing through you. What you DO, however… that sticks. The phone call you make. The first sentence you write. The one small step you take out the door. That is real. That creates a new reality. You cannot control the weather inside you, but you can ALWAYS choose to take one concrete, permanent action. Anchor yourself to the action, not the feeling. Let the feeling be the background noise to your forward motion.
Fourth. Do the next right thing, not all the right things. The sheer size of the challenge can be paralyzing. You see the whole mountain and you freeze. Stop looking at the mountain. Look at your feet. Your only job, right now, in this moment, is to figure out the very next right thing. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. It just has to be the next thing. Send the email. Drink a glass of water. Put on your shoes. Break the problem down until you find a piece so small you can’t possibly fail at it. Do that. Then, and only then, you can worry about what comes after.
You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step. And fifth. The most important one. Your strength is not the absence of struggle. Your strength IS the struggle. We have this idea that strong people are untouched. That they float above the mess. That is a lie. Strength isn't being impervious. Strength is the willingness to engage with the difficulty. It’s the scraped knees and the tear-stained face and the voice that cracks but keeps speaking. Strength is getting back up when everything in you wants to stay down. The struggle is not a sign that you are weak.
The struggle is the evidence that you are fighting. That you are trying. That you are incredibly, undeniably strong. So today, when it gets hard — and it will get hard — remember this. You are not broken because you are struggling. You are being forged. This is what growth feels like. It’s not gentle. It’s not clean. It’s the messy, difficult, powerful work of becoming. Now go do the work.
