Let’s begin where you are. In this room, in this chair. Allow your shoulders to soften… to fall away from your ears. Feel the support beneath you, holding you completely. And take one slow breath in… and a long, slow breath out. A study of over forty thousand people found that rates of perfectionism have been rising steadily since the nineteen-eighties. In our last pause together, we spoke about letting go of our burdens to find a bit of lightness. And I think one of the heaviest burdens we carry... is this quiet, constant pressure to be perfect.
It’s the voice that says you’re not trying hard enough. The feeling that one mistake could undo all your good work. It’s re-reading an email for the tenth time, searching for a flaw only you would ever notice. It’s looking at your life and seeing only the things that are out of place, instead of all the things that are right where they belong. Here’s what that means if you're a parent… it’s the pressure to craft a flawless childhood, to never miss a beat, to have all the right answers. Here’s what that means if you’re at your desk… it’s the fear that one typo, one misstep, one less-than-brilliant idea will define you.
And here’s what that means if you’re a creator, an artist, a dreamer… it’s the paralysis of the blank page, waiting for the perfect opening line, terrified that what you make won't live up to the vision in your head. This pressure is EXHAUSTING. It asks us to be machines, when our greatest gift is that we are not. So let’s try something. With your eyes soft, or closed… I want you to bring to mind one small imperfection from your day. Just one. Maybe it was a conversation that felt a little clumsy. A task at work that didn’t come out exactly as you’d hoped.
A moment of impatience you wish you could take back. See it in your mind. Don’t judge it. Just notice it. Now, feel the breath in your body. In… and out. This breath is not perfect. It’s just a breath. And it is enough to keep you alive. What if that small imperfection you’re holding… wasn’t a failure? What if it was just… evidence? Evidence that you are engaged with your life. That you are trying things. That you are showing up in a world that is messy and unpredictable. The Japanese have a concept called wabi-sabi.
Finding beauty in imperfection. A chipped tea cup is more beautiful because it has a story. It’s been used. It’s been loved. What if ‘good enough’ wasn’t a compromise? What if it was the WHOLE point? What if the goal was never the flawless outcome… but simply to be present for the process? To be warm, and kind, and human through it all. Let that thought settle. Good enough is a form of peace. Your worth is not measured by your flawlessness. It is measured by your warmth.
