Find a posture that feels like support. Maybe in your chair, feet on the floor. Or perhaps lying down, letting the surface beneath you hold your weight completely. Let's just arrive here. Together. Take one slow breath in... and as you release it, let go of the hurry of the day. Just this one breath. And this one. Researchers have a name for our tendency to quickly return to a stable level of happiness despite major life events. They call it the hedonic treadmill. In our last time together, Admin, we spoke of the gentle presence of the oak tree, arriving where you are.
But it's hard to feel that solid presence when your mind is already running on that treadmill, chasing the next thing that you hope will finally make you feel... settled. It's a quiet and constant hum, isn't it? The feeling of not... quite... being there yet. Not enough time in the day. Not enough progress on the project. Not enough energy to give to the people you love. It's the sense that you are standing on one side of a canyon, and the person you are supposed to be is on the other.
And you spend all your energy trying to build a bridge, or find a way to cross. You tell yourself, "when I finish this task," or "when I get that approval," or "when I finally have a quiet weekend... then I'll feel it. Then I'll be enough." But the other side of the canyon just... keeps moving. The finish line recedes as you run toward it. And the voice of that striving can be so convincing. It sounds like responsibility. It sounds like ambition. It sounds like not letting people down.
Here's what that means if you're Admin. It means you can have a day full of small wins, of tasks completed and emails answered, and still end it with a heavy feeling of everything you didn't get to. It means you can receive praise, and your mind will immediately jump to the next, bigger thing you have to prove. It's an exhaustion that sleep doesn't seem to touch, because it's an exhaustion of the spirit. But I want to offer a different thought today. A quiet rebellion against that treadmill.
What if 'enough' is not a destination? What if it's not the other side of the canyon at all? What if 'enough' is the ground you are standing on, right now? Not a prize to be won after a long and difficult struggle. But the simple, solid fact of your own presence. Here. The effort you gave today... was enough. The kindness you showed, even in a small way... was enough. The simple act of you, breathing in this quiet room... is profoundly, and completely, ENOUGH. It’s not a declaration of defeat.
It's not giving up. It's the opposite. It's the ultimate act of arrival. It's putting down the heavy tools you've been using to build that bridge to nowhere, and noticing the beauty of the place you ALREADY are. Here's what that means if you're Admin. It means your worth isn't pending. It's not waiting on an outcome. It is inherent. It means the you that showed up today, with all the day's weariness and worries, is the exact you that was needed. Nothing more, nothing less.
So as we bring this time to a close, just feel that for a moment. The feeling of the chair or the floor beneath you. Solid. Real. Let your breath be easy. Carry this one thought with you. Your presence is not a problem to be solved. It is a fact to be inhabited.
