Let’s begin right where you are. No need to change anything. Just notice your breath. The gentle rise and fall of your chest. The feeling of the chair or the floor beneath you. This moment is here. You are here. The team at Horizon Health found that being active for just twenty minutes helps reduce stress and anxiety. Twenty minutes. Last time, we talked about embracing the gold in our cracks... and today, we're exploring how the smallest, most gentle acts of care are what keep that gold shining. We get this idea in our heads that self-care has to be this grand, expensive thing.
A spa day. A vacation. Something we have to earn or schedule weeks in advance. But the National Institute of Mental Health says even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a BIG impact. So what does that mean for you, right now, in the middle of a demanding day? It means self-care isn't another thing to add to your to-do list. It's a way of being with yourself inside the life you already have. It’s the counselor Alexis Pyrdum’s idea of a quick check-in… just pausing to ask yourself, ‘What am I feeling right now?
And what do I need?’ Maybe the answer is a glass of water. Maybe it's five deep breaths. Maybe it's putting on one song and just... moving. It's not about fixing something that's broken. It's about nurturing what is alive. It’s proactive. It's tending to your own spirit before the world demands every last drop of it. And here’s the part we always get wrong. We think it’s selfish. We think taking that moment is taking something away from our work, our family, our responsibilities. But the research from Brown University Health found the exact opposite.
They said, "Taking time for rest and self-care actually INCREASES our productivity and our ability to care for others over the long haul." It’s not selfish. It is ESSENTIAL. It is the fuel that allows you to be the person you want to be for everyone else. You cannot pour from an empty cup. You just... can't. And tending to yourself is how you refill it. Not all at once. But drop by drop. So if you try this, and you forget for a day, or a week… that’s okay. Dr. Rizwana Rahman at Henry Ford Health says the key is consistency, but also forgiveness.
You just begin again. So as you move back into your day, carry this one thought. Just for today, find one single moment to ask yourself what you truly need. And then, without judgment… give it.
