A thirty-year study of over forty-thousand college students found that the pressure to be perfect has been steadily rising since 1989. Last week, we landed on this idea of finding warmth in the present moment… of feeling held and enough, just as you are. But that feeling is so often stolen by this quiet, relentless pressure to be flawless. So let’s begin there. Wherever you are, just arrive. Let your body settle into the chair, or the floor. Feel the solidness beneath you.
Take one breath in through the nose. And let it go with a sigh. One more. Inhale. And release. This pressure to be perfect… where do you feel it in your body? Maybe it’s a tightness in your chest. A knot in your stomach. A clenching in your jaw. It’s the voice that says, "not good enough." The one that replays the mistake, the awkward word, the thing you wish you’d done differently. It’s a cold, hard, polished surface. Nothing can get in. But also, nothing can get out.
Here’s what that means if you’re the one staring at a blank page, afraid to write the wrong first sentence. Here’s what that means if you’re avoiding a conversation because you don’t know the perfect thing to say. It means you’re living inside a fortress of your own making. Safe, perhaps. But also… terribly alone. There's an old Japanese art form called kintsugi. When a piece of pottery breaks, they don't throw it away. They mend it. They fill the cracks with lacquer mixed with powdered gold.
The belief is that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. The scars are not something to hide. They are part of the story. They are highlighted in gold. That’s what vulnerability is. It’s the courage to show the places where we have been broken. It’s the willingness to be seen, cracks and all. And this is the part we always get wrong. We think our strength, our competence, our perfection is what draws people to us. We think if we can just present this flawless version of ourselves, we will finally be worthy of love, of connection, of belonging.
But the opposite is true. Perfection doesn’t create connection; it creates distance. Admiration, maybe. Envy, sometimes. But not the deep, messy, human warmth we’re all really looking for. That warmth comes from the cracks. It comes from the moment you say, “I’m scared.” Or “I was wrong.” Or “I don’t know how to do this alone.” Those are not confessions of failure. They are invitations. They are the gold lacquer. They are the moments that turn a collection of individuals into a community, a friendship, a family.
Your supposed imperfections are the most beautiful, relatable parts of you. So let’s go back to that feeling in your body. That tightness. That knot. Don’t try to fix it. Don’t try to make it perfect. Just… be with it. Breathe into it. Imagine you could pour just a little bit of liquid gold into that space. Not to seal it up forever, but to honor the story it tells. To acknowledge the strength it took to get this far. The warmth we are seeking isn’t out there somewhere.
It’s right here. It’s in the acceptance of this moment. This body. This beautifully imperfect life. You are not a project to be perfected.
