Wherever you are right now… just arrive. Feel the support beneath you… the chair, the floor. The weight of your own body, held. Notice the air as it enters… and as it leaves. No need to change a thing. Just this breath. And this one. Think about the last time a friend called you, upset. They’d made a mistake at work, or said the wrong thing, and they were just… spinning. That feeling connects to what we were exploring last time, finding strength in small, uncertain moments, and the quiet power of tiny steps.
And what do you do for that friend on the phone? You listen. You don’t rush in with judgment. You don’t pull up a list of all the other times they’ve messed up. You offer perspective. You offer warmth. You might say, ‘It’s okay. You’re human.’ Or, ‘This one moment doesn’t define you.’ You offer them a hand, to help them get back up. You remind them of their goodness. Now… turn that inward. Think about the last time you made a mistake.
The last time you felt that sting of regret, or embarrassment. What was the voice in your own head like? Was it as kind? As patient? Or was it… a little harsher? Maybe a lot harsher. A relentless critic, replaying the error on a loop, pointing out exactly where you failed. So often, the person we are the hardest on… is the person right here. In this chair. Breathing this air. Here’s what that means if you're the one who is feeling the weight of your own judgment.
The one who feels like they aren't enough. What would happen if you decided to treat yourself like that dear friend? What if, in the moment you realize your own mistake, you paused… took a breath… and offered yourself that same gentle understanding? That same quiet permission to be imperfectly, beautifully human. This isn't about letting yourself off the hook. It's not selfish, or lazy, or indulgent. It is the opposite.
It is about giving yourself the stability and the strength to actually learn… instead of just being crushed by the shame of it all. Self-compassion isn’t a pass. It’s fuel. It’s the firm, kind hand at your own back, helping you take that next tiny step forward. So for the next few moments, just sit with that. No need to solve anything. Just allow for the possibility. The possibility that you are worthy of the same grace you so freely give to everyone else.
Today, let the kindness you so easily give away… finally find its way home.
