The Japanese art of kintsugi uses powdered gold to repair broken pottery. It doesn't hide the damage. It makes the cracks the most beautiful part of the object. In our last time together, we spoke about meeting the day with a soft, steady presence. Kintsugi is what that presence looks like in practice — not ignoring the cracks, but honoring them. Seeing them as part of a history that is worthy of gold. So let’s find that, right now. Wherever you are, allow your body to settle.

Feel the support of the chair or the floor beneath you. You don’t need to change your posture, just notice it. Notice the way your clothes rest on your skin. Notice the temperature of the air. And now, bring your awareness to your breath. Just the simple, quiet rhythm of it. In… and out. No need to force it or deepen it. Simply feel the way your body breathes itself. It’s been doing it all day, in the background. A quiet, faithful rhythm. The most ordinary magic there is.

From this place of quiet, let your eyes gently open, if they were closed. And let them land on one ordinary object in the room with you. It could be a coffee mug. A pen. A book on a shelf. A scuff on the floor. Don’t search for something beautiful. Just choose something that is… there. Something you see every day and maybe don’t truly see at all. Now, let’s really look at it. If you can, pick it up. Feel its weight in your hand. The substance of it. Turn it over. Notice its texture.

Is it smooth? Is it rough? Trace one of its edges with your finger. Feel the line it makes. Notice the way the light in the room touches it. Where are the shadows? Where are the small reflections? And now, look for its story. Look for its imperfections. That tiny chip on the rim of the mug. The way the spine of the book is softened from being opened again and again. The small scratch on the surface of the table. These are not flaws. They are evidence of a life. Proof of use.

Proof of contact. This object has been part of a world. Part of your world. It is not a pristine thing in a museum. It is real. Here's what that means if you're sitting here, thinking about your day. Your life is not a museum piece either. It has scuffs. It has cracks. Moments of frustration, conversations that went sideways, plans that fell apart. We spend so much energy trying to hide those cracks. To pretend we are smooth, and polished, and perfect. But the practice of kintsugi suggests something else entirely.

It suggests that the breaks are where the beauty can enter. The repair itself becomes the art. So the invitation today is not to have a perfect day. The invitation is to have a WHOLE day. To notice the moments of ease and smoothness… the easy conversation, the warm cup of coffee, the feeling of sunlight. And to also notice the cracks… the moment of impatience, the unexpected problem, the feeling of being tired. And to hold both, without judgment. To see it all as part of the same, one-of-a-kind object that is your life.

The goal isn’t a flawless day. It’s an authentic one. The richness is not in avoiding the breaks, but in how we meet them. With what gold do we choose to fill them? Maybe the gold is a deep breath. Maybe it's a moment of self-compassion. Maybe it's just the simple, quiet act of NOTICING. Let the object go. Let your gaze soften. Come back to the feeling of your own breath, moving in and out. The quietest magic. Today, may you find the gold in the cracks.
