A single redwood tree can live for over two thousand years. That's two millennia of enduring storms, of growing toward the light, of branches breaking and the trunk slowly healing over. In our last time together, we spoke of kintsugi, the art of mending what’s broken with gold… finding the beauty in the story of the cracks. Today, I want to sit with a different kind of endurance. The quiet courage it takes not to weather a storm, but to simply stand in the sun...

as you are. So wherever you are right now, let's just arrive. You can close your eyes if that feels right for you. Let your body be held by the chair, or the floor beneath you. You don't need to sit a certain way, or fix your posture. Just allow yourself to be here. Feel the quiet weight of your own presence in this space. And now, let's find the breath. Don't change it. Don't deepen it. Just notice it. The simple, steady rhythm of air entering... and leaving. In... and out.

Each breath is a small, quiet act of being. It asks for nothing. It proves nothing. It simply IS. This is the rhythm we’re looking for today... a gentle, persistent presence. With every exhale, feel a little more of the day's hurry fall away. Not forcing it. Just letting it go. Like dust settling in a quiet room. Now, let that soft awareness travel from your breath into your body. Let's start with the hands. Are they clenched, or open? Just notice. Move up into your arms, your shoulders.

This is where we so often carry the weight of expectation... ours and others'. If you feel tension there, just acknowledge it with a quiet, internal 'hello'. No need to fight it. Move your awareness to your jaw, the space between your eyebrows. The places we hold our focus, our worry. Just notice what's there. This is the armor we carry. The small ways we brace ourselves for the world. And simply noticing it, without judgment... is the first step in choosing to set it down, even for a moment.

Because showing up as your authentic self... it often feels like setting down that armor, piece by piece. It feels vulnerable. And the world tells us that courage is loud. A roar. A grand gesture. But I think, more often, true courage is a whisper. It's the quiet, internal choice to not pretend. It’s the courage to say 'I don't know' in a meeting where everyone else seems certain. It’s the choice to share a piece of your art, or a hope, or a fear... with one trusted person.

It's letting a compliment land without deflecting it. These moments feel so small. Almost insignificant. But they are NOT insignificant. Here’s the turn. We think strength is about being unbreakable, like a wall. But maybe... maybe real strength is about being permeable. Like soil. Able to receive, to be changed, to let things pass through. The courage isn't in never feeling fear or doubt. The courage is in feeling it... and choosing to be yourself anyway. THAT is the bravest thing.

To stand in your own life, without apology, and trust that who you are... right now... is enough. That is the ultimate act of gentle persistence. So as we prepare to return, come back to your breath for just a moment. That same, simple rhythm that has been with you this whole time. In... and out. The quiet, steady proof that you are here. When you're ready, you can slowly bring some awareness back to the room around you. Maybe wiggle your fingers and toes. Notice the quality of the light, the distant sounds.

You don't have to rush. Carry this sense of gentle permission with you into the rest of your day. The permission to show up, just as you are. Your truest self doesn't need to be earned... it only needs to be allowed.
