Wherever you are right now... find your breath. Just one. In... and out. Feel the weight of your body, here, in this moment. Nothing else to do. Nowhere else to be. In Japan, there is an art form called Kintsugi. It’s the centuries-old practice of repairing broken pottery with lacquer that has been dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Last time we sat together, we spoke about finding comfort in uncertainty, and this... this feels like the next part of that conversation.
Because Kintsugi doesn't just fix what's broken. It highlights the cracks with gold, suggesting that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. And yet, how much of our lives do we spend trying to hide our cracks? We put on the perfect-job face, the perfect-parent face, the perfect-friend face. We scroll through feeds of seamless, golden lives and feel a little voice inside us whisper... why isn't that me? We work so hard to present this polished, unbroken version of ourselves to the world.
A version that is always capable, always happy, always... on. And can we just admit how exhausting that is? The sheer effort it takes to hold all the pieces together so no one sees the seams. The constant, low-grade anxiety that if you let your guard down for one second, it will all come crashing down. That someone will see the messy, complicated, imperfect truth of you... and turn away. Here’s what that means for you, right now, in this quiet room. That tightness in your chest?
That tension in your jaw? That is the physical cost of pretending. Your body is keeping score. It knows you are carrying the weight of being two people—the real you, and the one you think you’re supposed to be. And it’s tired. You’re allowed to be tired. But here is the turn. Here is the part we so often miss. The performance of perfection isn’t just tiring. It’s isolating. The flawless, perfectly-together, always-okay version of you... doesn't actually need anyone.
It has no cracks for connection to seep into. No vulnerability that invites another person to say, "me too." By hiding our imperfections, we rob ourselves of the profound, healing relief of being truly seen. We build a beautiful, smooth wall around ourselves and then wonder why we feel so alone. So what if, just for today, you decided to be the broken pot? What if you gave yourself permission to not have it all together? To be sad, or confused, or just... a little bit messy.
It doesn’t mean you have to announce it to the world. It just means you stop fighting it inside yourself. You stop treating your struggles like failures to be hidden, and start seeing them as part of your story. Part of your life. Proof that you have lived, and felt, and survived. Those cracks are not signs of weakness. They are proof of your resilience. Let your shoulders drop. Let your breath soften. Let yourself be exactly as you are. Your strongest parts are the ones that have been broken and put back together.
