A study at Penn State University found that for people who struggle with worry, ninety-one percent of their specific worries never came true. That’s a staggering number. And it makes you wonder about the weight of that other nine percent... the things that really are uncertain. Last week, we talked about finding a moment for self-compassion, for genuine warmth. And perhaps the most compassionate thing we can do for ourselves is to learn how to sit with that uncertainty… to simply not know.

So let’s try that. Wherever you are, just let your body settle. Feel the weight of it, supported by the chair or the floor. Notice the air touching your skin. And now, bring your awareness to your breath. Not changing it. Just noticing the gentle rise... and fall... of your chest or your belly. In... and out. This rhythm has been with you your entire life, a constant presence through every moment of knowing... and not knowing. Now, I want you to call to mind something you’re currently uncertain about.

Don’t dive into the story of it, or the details. Just feel the question of it. The ‘what if’. The ‘I don’t know’. And notice where that feeling lives in your body. Is it a tightness in your chest? A knot in your stomach? A tension in your jaw? Most of us, when we feel this, our first instinct is to clench. To brace. To try and force an answer that isn't here yet. We are trying to solve the feeling. Here's what that means if you're holding that tension right now: it means your body is trying to protect you.

It’s trying to control the uncontrollable. Thank it for that. And then, just for this moment, see if you can invite it to soften. Imagine that feeling of uncertainty is something you are holding in your hand. Feel the tight fist. The strain in your knuckles, your forearm. That’s the work of resisting. Of fighting. Now... what would it feel like to slowly... open your hand? To let the fingers uncurl. To let the palm face upward. This is not about getting rid of the uncertainty.

It's still there. You’re just not fighting it anymore. You’re making space for it. This is the turn. We think strength is in the clenched fist... in the forcing of a solution. But what if real strength is in the open hand? The capacity to stay present and soft when you don't have the answer. The courage to yield. Not to give up, but to give way. To allow the moment to be what it is: unresolved. Here’s what that means for that big decision you’re facing, or that relationship you’re questioning, or that future you can’t quite see.

It means you can stop demanding an answer from yourself today. The work is not to find the answer. The work is to become okay with its absence. To carry the question with an open hand. So as you move through your day, just notice the clenching. The moments you’re trying to force a resolution. And see if you can meet it with this image. The slow, deliberate uncurling of a fist. It’s okay not to know what happens next. You are only asked to be here now.
