The act of exhaling is, by definition, a release. It’s the only part of the breath cycle that requires no muscular effort at all. In our last time together, we looked for a two-minute pause to find calm in the clutter. Today is about what happens when we decide not to pick all that clutter back up again. So wherever you are, let’s begin there. With your breath. Don’t change a thing. Just notice it. The gentle rise of your chest or belly on the in-breath… and the fall on the out-breath.
Now, bring your attention just to the exhale. That moment of release. The body knows how to do this perfectly. It lets go of the air it no longer needs… to make space for the new. Feel that for a moment. The effortless surrender of the exhale. And as you feel that physical release… I want you to gently ask yourself a question. What am I carrying? No need to go searching for an answer. Just ask the question and see what arises.
What thoughts… what worries… what expectations… have you been holding onto? Imagine them, if you can, as stones in your hands. Some are small pebbles, little annoyances from the day. Some might be much heavier… old regrets, future fears. You’ve been holding them for so long, maybe you forgot you were even carrying them. The muscles in your arms and shoulders have just accepted it as the new normal. Just notice the weight.
Acknowledge the effort it takes to hold on. No judgment. No need to fix it. Just… oh. There it is. Now… we’re going to do something very simple. We’re not going to throw the stones. We’re not going to fight them. We’re just going to open our hands. Take a slow breath in… and on the exhale… imagine your fingers uncurling. One by one. Releasing their grip. Imagine the stones, not crashing to the floor, but just… dissolving.
Or maybe they simply roll away, their purpose served. Feel the air on your empty palms. Feel the lightness in your arms, your shoulders, your jaw. The space that has been created where the weight used to be. This space belongs to you. This isn’t about pretending the burdens don’t exist. It’s about recognizing that you don’t have to carry them everywhere you go. You can set them down. Even for a moment. You can choose to open your hands.
You can always, always come back to the release of the exhale. It’s your anchor. It’s your permission slip to let go. So as we close our time together, carry this feeling with you. This lightness. This space. Lightness isn’t earned… it’s remembered.
