(gentle, unhurried music begins and fades to a low, ambient bed) The average positive feeling from a small, pleasant event lasts for about twenty-three seconds. Just twenty-three seconds. In our last moment of warmth together, Admin, we spoke about self-compassion. And perhaps the most compassionate act is simply allowing ourselves to be present for those brief, good seconds when they arrive. So let’s start there. Wherever you are right now… just arrive. Feel the weight of your body. The points of contact… where you meet the chair, or the floor.

Notice the air on your skin. And take one breath. Not a special breath. Not a deep, performative breath. Just the next one. Feel it enter. And feel it leave. That’s all. You’re here. There’s a temptation to believe that well-being is a grand project. That it’s something we build, like a house, with big beams and a solid foundation. Something that requires blueprints and hard labor. But what if it’s more like… collecting sea glass? What if it’s less about construction, and more about quiet observation? Think about your day so far. Or yesterday. Think about the tiny, almost invisible moments of ease.

The first sip of coffee… that specific warmth before the day’s demands settle in. The way the light slanted across a room for just a minute. A surprisingly good song coming on the radio. A stranger’s kind smile. These things are so small. So fleeting. They last, maybe, twenty-three seconds. And then they’re gone. Our brains, wired for survival, are designed to notice the threat, the problem, the deadline. They are not designed to catalog fleeting moments of contentment. They let them pass right through. Here’s what that means if you're Admin. It means your attention is a finite and precious resource, and by default, it’s probably allocated to finding and fixing what’s broken.

That is a useful skill. But it isn't the only one. To notice the good thing… the small joy… is a quiet act of rebellion against that default programming. It’s not about ignoring the challenges. It’s not about pretending the hard things aren't real. They are. It’s about choosing to pick up one smooth stone from the beach. And then another. And another. Individually, they are almost weightless. But in your pocket… together… you begin to feel them. They create a presence. A gentle, solid weight. Each moment is a single note. It’s lovely, but it’s gone in an instant.

The practice… the REAL work… is learning to hear the melody they make when you string them together. It’s about building a different kind of memory. Not a memory of grand achievements, but a felt sense of warmth. An accumulated glow. The point isn't to feel "happy" all the time. That’s a myth. It’s an impossible, exhausting standard. The point is to build a reservoir of warmth inside of you. To gather the kindling. So that when the cold winds blow—and they always do—you have an inner source of heat that is entirely YOURS. One that you built, one tiny spark, one twenty-three-second moment at a time.

It’s not a fortress against sorrow. It’s a fireplace inside it. So let your body soften, just a little more. Let your breath find its own rhythm again. No need to search for anything. No need to strive. Just rest here for a moment, in this quiet space you’ve made. And as we prepare to carry on… let this one thought settle. Today, just find ONE. One small, good thing. And let it be enough.
