Wherever you are right now, just for a moment… find your breath. Feel the quiet rise and fall of your chest. The feeling of the chair or the floor beneath you. You don’t need to change anything. Just notice. A lobster’s shell doesn’t grow. In order to get bigger, it has to shed its hard, protective exterior, find a safe place to hide, and wait, completely soft and defenseless, for a new, larger shell to harden. In our last episode, we talked about the practice of arriving right where you are.
And sometimes… where we arrive is in that soft place. Feeling a little exposed. A little too tender for the world. So we learn, very early, to build our own shells. They aren’t made of calcium, like the lobster’s. Ours are made of other things. Made of not asking for help. Made of pretending we’ve got it all figured out. Made of nodding when we’re actually lost, of saying “I’m fine” when our heart is aching. Each little act of hiding becomes another layer. We think it’s making us safer. Stronger.
But feel, just for a second, what that shell actually costs. Feel it in your own body. Where do you hold it? Is it a tightness in your jaw? A tension across your shoulders, like you’re bracing for a blow that never comes? Is it a knot in your stomach? That armor is HEAVY. It takes a constant, draining energy to maintain it, to keep the performance going, to make sure no one sees the cracks. We spend so much of our lives holding our breath, hoping no one notices the soft, vulnerable person inside.
And here’s the turn. The thing we get backwards. We think the vulnerability is the danger. That the softness is the weakness. But the lobster knows something we forget. The only way to GROW… is to be soft. The shell doesn’t just keep threats out. It keeps life out. It keeps connection out. It keeps love out. And eventually, it becomes a prison, preventing us from ever becoming the next, larger version of ourselves. The weakness isn't the softness. The weakness is the SHELL that is slowly suffocating you.
The real courage… the most profound strength… is daring to be seen without it. So what does this mean for you, right now, at the end of a long day? It doesn’t mean you have to stand in the middle of the town square and announce all your fears. It’s quieter than that. It means allowing one person… just one safe person… to see a little piece of the real you. It means sending the text that says, “Actually, today was really hard.” It means asking the question you’re afraid is stupid. It means letting a tear fall without immediately wiping it away.
It’s the profound, bone-deep relief of putting down the armor, even for a moment. The quiet exhale of no longer pretending. Because when someone sees your softness, your imperfection, and they don’t run away… but instead they lean in? That is the feeling of belonging. That is the feeling of coming home to yourself. Your softness is not a liability. It is an invitation.
