Wherever you are right now… just arrive. Feel the weight of your body in the chair, or on the floor. The gentle pull of gravity, holding you here. Notice the air in the room… the temperature on your skin. Let your shoulders fall away from your ears. And take one breath. Just one. In… And out. A 2023 study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who intentionally added micro-moments of joy to their daily routines increased their overall life satisfaction by twenty-five percent.
In just two weeks. Last time, we spoke about arriving where you are… about letting go of the weight of tomorrow. This is the other side of that same breath. It’s not just about releasing the future’s burden… it’s about discovering the present moment’s LIGHTNESS. Because our culture… it doesn’t value lightness. It values weight. Achievement. The next big thing. That constant, humming “Go! Go! Go!” that becomes the soundtrack to our days. And in that rush, we forget.
We forget what the happiness author Laura Vanderkam calls the “bread and butter of human happiness.” Small, repeated pleasures. She says cutting them out is painful because it requires self-discipline every single day. The discipline to say no to the quiet cup of coffee, the walk in the park, the five minutes of silence before the house wakes up. Here’s what that means if you’re feeling burned out. It means you’ve likely been practicing the discipline of denial, instead of the practice of receiving.
The researcher Nicole Mead found that these simple pleasures… they aren’t an indulgence. They are vital. They infuse our lives with positive feelings, which gives us the energy and perspective to confront the big, challenging things. They are the tiny counterweights that keep the whole system from tipping over under the stress of the day. They help us overcome the brain's natural tendency to focus on what's wrong, and instead, start noticing what's RIGHT.
So what does this actually look like? How do we find this in a life that feels packed and demanding? It’s not another thing to add to your to-do list. It’s a shift in awareness. It’s what the mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn meant when he said… "The little things? The little moments? They aren’t LITTLE." Here’s what that means for you, right now, in this moment. It means giving yourself permission. Permission to notice. Permission to savor. To let one small, good thing land.
Let’s try. Right now. Just for this one breath cycle. What is one simple, uncomplicated thing you can notice? Maybe it’s the feeling of air entering your lungs. Cool on the way in… warm on the way out. Maybe it’s a sliver of sunlight on the floor. The distant sound of a bird. The feeling of your own heartbeat, steady and quiet inside your chest. You don’t have to chase it. You don’t have to analyze it. You just have to let it be there. To let it rub up against you, as one writer said, like a purring cat.
A small, unassuming, disarming moment of okay-ness. Of peace. Of joy. This is the work. Not the striving. Just the noticing. So as you move back into your day… Carry this quietness with you. Today… find one small thing… and let it be enough.
