A New Mercy with Every Sunrise: Gentle Morning Bible Reflections

The sun will rise at a slightly different time tomorrow than it did today. It is never in the exact same place twice. In our last time together, we spoke about beginning our day grounded. Today’s scripture takes that idea and gives it a powerful promise, one that is tied to the newness of every sunrise. Our reading is from the book of Lamentations, chapter three, verses twenty-two and twenty-three. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

A lament is a passionate expression of grief or sorrow. The book was written after the city of Jerusalem was destroyed. Everything was gone. The person you were at ten p.m. last night—tired, discouraged, maybe frustrated with yourself or someone else—is not the person you have to be at seven a.m. this morning. You don't have to carry it. You can look at the day ahead not as a continuation of yesterday's struggles, but as a truly new chapter. The final line of the verse is, "great is your faithfulness." The writer isn't just saying he hopes God will be faithful. After declaring that mercies are new every morning, he looks at this truth as the ultimate proof of God’s character. The constant sunrise is a physical sign of a spiritual reality. He is faithful. He will show up. He has already shown up this morning with a fresh supply of grace just for you.
