The sun rose this morning at six-oh-four AM. Yesterday we spoke about finding a new mercy with every sunrise, a fresh start offered with the light. And with the light of this new day comes a chance to set our hearts right, especially when they feel heavy. There is a passage I turn to in these moments. It comes from the book of Philippians, chapter four. It says: “Do not be anxious about anything… but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” “Do not be anxious about anything.” That first part can land a little hard, can’t it?

It feels like an impossible command. In a world with so much to worry about… from the bills on the counter, to the health of someone we love, to the headlines on our phone… how can we not be anxious? And I believe the scripture understands this. It’s not a scolding. It’s an invitation. It’s not saying, “Stop feeling that,” because feelings are real. They are powerful. Instead, it’s saying, “When you feel that… here is what you can do with it.” It gives us a process. A gentle, three-part path to walk when we feel that familiar knot of worry tightening in our chest.

First, it says, “by prayer and petition.” This means we are invited to be specific. To name the thing that is stealing our peace. We don't have to pretend we are fine. We can come to God and say, “I am worried about this specific meeting today.” Or, “I am scared about this specific conversation I need to have.” Petition is simply telling God exactly what is on your heart. You are not meant to carry it alone. But then comes the second part, and it’s the one that changes everything. It says to bring our prayers and petitions… “with thanksgiving.” This is the pivot.

This is the key that turns the lock. It doesn’t say to be thankful for the bad thing. It says to bring thanksgiving with your worry. It means that even as you are laying down your fear about your finances, you can also say, “Thank you for the roof over my head.” Even as you are asking for healing for a friend, you can say, “Thank you for the gift of their friendship in my life.” Gratitude, in the middle of anxiety, does something miraculous. It doesn’t deny the darkness. It just reminds our heart that light also exists, at the very same time.

It shifts our focus from the size of the problem to the size of our God. And what is the result of this? What happens when we bring our specific worries to God, wrapped in genuine gratitude? The verse gives us the promise. “And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds.” Notice it doesn’t promise that the problem will instantly vanish. It doesn’t promise that the difficult situation will be immediately resolved. It promises something better. It promises peace. And not just any peace. A peace “which transcends all understanding.” That means it’s a peace that doesn’t make sense on paper.

It’s the peace that allows you to stand firm in the middle of a storm. It’s a quiet calm in your spirit even when the world outside is chaotic. It’s a peace that your circumstances can’t explain and can’t take away. And I love that final image. That this peace will “guard” your heart and your mind. Like a gentle, steady soldier standing watch. Protecting your innermost self from being overwhelmed by fear and anxiety. So today, when anxiety comes knocking—and it will—you have an invitation. You can name the worry. You can find one small thing to be thankful for.

And you can trust the promise. Peace is not the absence of trouble. It is the presence of God guarding you in the middle of it.
