A recent study found that nearly seventy-five percent of adults feel the weight of stress or anxiety on a daily basis. That’s three out of every four people you see. In our last episode, number seventy-seven, we talked about Proverbs three, and how trusting God can bring clarity and make your path straight. But what about the feeling of anxiety while you're on that path, waiting for things to become clear? That’s where we’re going today. Let's listen to this promise from the Apostle Paul. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." That first line can feel like an impossible command. "Do not be anxious about anything." For most of us, that sounds like being told not to be hungry when you haven't eaten. It feels like a standard we can't possibly meet. But it’s not a command to simply stop feeling. It’s an invitation to do something with the feeling. The instruction isn't just "stop worrying." It's "stop worrying... and do this instead." So what is the "this"?

The verse gives a very specific formula. Prayer. Petition. And the one ingredient we almost always forget: thanksgiving. Here's what that means for you today. When you feel that knot of anxiety tightening in your chest about a meeting, a difficult conversation, or an uncertain future... the instruction is to take that specific worry to God. That’s the prayer and petition part. You name the thing that’s weighing you down. You ask for help, for wisdom, for a way through. But then comes the pivot. "With thanksgiving." This is the part that changes everything.

Right in the middle of asking for what you need, you are invited to pause and thank God for what you already have. It doesn't have to be related. You can be anxious about your job, and still be thankful for the sun coming through the window. You can be worried about a relationship, and still be thankful for the friend who called you yesterday. Here’s the shift that happens when you do that. Thanksgiving forces your mind to change its focus. Anxiety keeps your eyes locked on what might go wrong, on what you lack, on the threat you perceive.

But gratitude reminds you of God's presence and past faithfulness. It pulls your attention from the size of the storm to the strength of your anchor. It’s not about pretending the problem isn't real. It's about remembering that God is real, too. Thanksgiving is the practice that makes that truth feel solid again. And the result? "The peace of God, which transcends all understanding." Notice it doesn't say "the peace that comes when your problems are solved." It's a peace that shows up right in the middle of the mess. It transcends, or surpasses, all understanding.

That means it’s a peace that doesn't make sense on paper. You might still have the problem, the uncertainty might still be there, but a calm settles over you anyway. That’s the peace of God. And that peace will "guard your hearts and your minds." Think of a sentry, a soldier standing watch. That’s what this peace does. It stands guard over your emotions—your heart—and your thoughts—your mind. It stops anxiety from running wild and taking over. It protects your inner world from the chaos of the outer world. So today, when anxiety comes knocking, don't just try to fight it.

Answer the door with a prayer. Present your request. And then, deliberately, find one thing—just one thing—to be thankful for. You are not trading your anxiety for a solution. You are trading your anxiety for His peace. The peace isn't a prize you get when the storm finally passes. It's the anchor you hold onto in the middle of it.
