The average person has over sixty thousand thoughts in a single day. In our last episode, we talked about the importance of starting the day grounded in peace. But that peace can feel a long way off when those sixty thousand thoughts are all competing for your attention. So this morning, let's turn to a promise. This comes from the book of Philippians, chapter four, verses six and seven. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” That first line can feel like an impossible command. “Do not be anxious about anything.” If it were as simple as just deciding not to worry, none of us would ever feel anxious again. But that’s not what this passage is saying. It isn’t just a command to stop. It’s an invitation to replace. It gives us a specific, practical thing to do with our anxiety. It says in every situation… not just the big ones… present your requests to God.

Here’s what that means for you today. It means your anxiety has an address. The worry about your meeting this afternoon, the concern for a family member, the stress about a bill that’s due… those things don’t have to just circle endlessly in your mind. This verse gives you a place to take them. The instruction is to hand them over. But notice how we’re told to do it. “By prayer and petition, with thanksgiving.” That last part—with thanksgiving—is the key. It changes everything.

It shifts our posture from one of demanding to one of trust. It’s a way of saying, “God, I am bringing you this problem, and even before I see the solution, I am thanking you. I am thanking you that you are good, that you are listening, and that you are in control when I am not.” Here’s what that means if you're feeling overwhelmed. Your prayer doesn't have to be a perfectly composed speech. It can be as simple as, “God, I’m worried about this. I’m giving it to you. And thank you… thank you that I don’t have to carry it by myself.” That small act of gratitude opens the door for what comes next.

And what comes next is the promise. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds.” This is so important. The promise isn’t that your problems will instantly disappear. The promise is that His peace will stand guard. The word used for “guard” is a military term. It means to garrison, to protect a city by surrounding it with soldiers. This peace isn’t something we can manufacture. It “transcends all understanding.” You can’t think your way into it.

It’s a gift. It’s a peace that shows up in the middle of the storm, not just after it passes. It guards your heart—your emotional center—and your mind—your thought life—from being overrun by anxiety. Here’s what that means for the rest of your day. When a worry comes knocking, you don’t have to let it in. You can remember that there is a guard at the door. Your job isn’t to fight the worry on your own. Your job is to hand it over, with thanksgiving, and to let God’s peace do the guarding.

Anxiety wants to be the watchman of your heart. It wants to pace the walls of your mind, shouting about every possible threat. God offers to post His peace there instead. Today, you get to decide who holds that post.
