The Earth is spinning at over one thousand miles per hour, but right here, in this moment, everything can be still. In our last Morning Calm episode, we spoke about finding peace and clarity for the day ahead. This morning's scripture gives us the direct instruction for how to begin. From the book of Psalms, chapter forty-six, verse ten. In the New International Version, God says: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Let’s sit with that first command for a moment.

“Be still.” It sounds so simple. But it’s one of the hardest things for us to do. Stillness is not just the absence of motion. It’s the absence of striving. The original Hebrew word suggests letting go, slacking your grip, releasing your hands from the thing you are trying so hard to control. Think about what you are holding onto this morning. A worry about a meeting. A conversation you’re dreading. A problem that feels too big to solve.

The instruction here is to simply… open your hands. To stop fighting for a moment. It doesn’t mean the problem goes away. It means you are choosing to stop wrestling with it, just for now. Here's what that means for your day. Before you check your first email, or as you wait for the coffee to brew, you can practice this. Take one full breath. And on the exhale, imagine your hands unclenching. That is the beginning of being still.

It is a physical act that makes way for a spiritual one. You are creating a small, quiet space in a loud and busy world. And into that quiet space comes the second part of the verse. “…and know that I am God.” The stillness is not the destination. The stillness is the path. We quiet ourselves not for the sake of silence, but so we can finally hear. So we can know. This isn’t about learning a new fact about God.

This is about recognizing His presence. It’s a relational knowledge, an awareness that settles into your bones. In the quiet, you stop hearing your own anxieties so loudly. And you start to perceive the one who is holding everything together. That’s why the verse doesn’t end there. It continues: “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Here's what that means if you're feeling overwhelmed.

Your small act of being still connects you to the biggest reality there is. The God who holds the nations and the entire earth in His hands is the same God who is with you in the quiet of your kitchen. Your personal peace isn’t fragile or imagined. It is an anchor dropped into the bedrock of the universe. Knowing He is God puts your own struggles into their proper perspective. They are real, but they are not ultimate.

He is. So as you move into this day, carry this verse not as a rule, but as an invitation. The world will demand your attention. Your phone will buzz. Your to-do list will grow. But you have a place of refuge you can access at any time. Find a moment. Just one. Be still. Let go of what you’re clinging to. And listen for the quiet, steady truth that holds it all. The world will keep spinning at a thousand miles per hour.

But in the quiet, you can find your center—and know that He is God.
