Welcome back to Morning Calm. Yesterday we spoke of finding rest for our souls. Today, we turn to the source of that rest. From the Book of Proverbs, chapter three, verses five and six. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. This is a verse many of us know by heart. We hear it, and we nod. But living it out, especially when the path ahead is anything but straight… that’s another matter.

Let’s sit with these words for a moment. The first part is an invitation. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Not just the part of your heart that feels spiritual. Not just the part that shows up on Sunday. ALL of it. The worried part. The ambitious part. The tired and confused part. Here's what that means if you're facing a choice today. It means you can bring your whole self to the decision. You don't have to pretend you have it all together. The invitation is to trust from a place of honesty, with all the messy, uncertain feelings included.

God is not afraid of your anxiety or your doubt. He welcomes it. Then comes the challenge. “…and lean not on your own understanding.” This is difficult. Your understanding is a gift. Your logic, your experience, your ability to reason… these are good things. But they have limits. They can only see so far. They build their models based on the past, but they can’t fully account for a future held by God. Here's what that means if you're trying to figure everything out. It’s permission to stop. It’s permission to admit, “I don’t know.” Leaning not on your own understanding means you don't have to carry the burden of having the perfect answer.

You can release the need to control every outcome. It's an exhale. It’s letting go of the illusion that your intellect alone can solve every problem. The next phrase tells us how to do this. “In all your ways submit to him.” Notice the word “all.” Not just in the big, life-altering decisions. Not just when you’re at a crossroads. In ALL your ways. The way you answer an email. The way you speak to your family this morning. The way you approach your first task of the day. Each small moment is an opportunity to acknowledge Him.

To align your intention with His character. Here's what that means for your schedule today. It means that the most mundane item on your to-do list can become an act of worship. That difficult conversation is a chance to submit your words to Him. That tedious project is a chance to submit your effort to Him. It turns the ordinary into something sacred. And finally, the promise. “…and he will make your paths straight.” This is the beautiful, reassuring result of that trust and submission. It doesn’t promise that the path will be easy.

It doesn’t promise it will be free of obstacles or pain. The promise is that it will be made straight. Cleared. Directed. A crooked, confusing trail becomes a clear way forward. He will remove the bends you can’t see around. He will level the ground you’re about to walk on. Imagine you are walking through a dense fog. You can only see the ground right in front of your feet. You don’t need to see the destination, miles away. You only need to see the next safe place to step. Trusting Him is like that.

You take the one step you can see, submitting that small movement to Him. And as you do, the fog clears… just enough for the next step. Then the next. He makes the path straight, not all at once, but step by trusting step.
