Good morning. It is a gift to be with you again, to share this quiet space before the day begins. Let’s start our time together with a word from Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi. Chapter four, verses six and seven. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The first part of that verse can feel like an impossible command.
"Do not be anxious about anything." We live in a world that gives us a thousand things to be anxious about every single day. The health of our loved ones. The stability of our work. The headlines on the news. The quiet worries we don't speak aloud. So when we hear "do not be anxious," it can almost feel like we're being told we're failing if we feel that worry. But that’s not the heart of this message. This isn’t a command to simply stop feeling. It’s an invitation to do something with the feeling.
The verse gives us a clear, practical path. It says, “but in every situation…” Not just the big, life-altering crises. But in every situation. The frustrating traffic. The difficult conversation you have to have later today. The bill that was higher than you expected. Here's what that means for you, right now, as you think about the day ahead. It means that whatever is causing that knot in your stomach has a specific destination. You are invited to take that worry, name it, and carry it somewhere.
The verse tells us exactly how. By prayer and petition. That’s just a way of saying, “talk to God about it.” Be specific. Tell him what you’re afraid of. Tell him what you need. This isn't about using fancy words. It’s about being honest. And then it adds one crucial ingredient: “with thanksgiving.” Here’s what that means when you’re worried about a problem at work. It means you can start by thanking God for the job itself. For the mind He gave you to solve problems. For the opportunity to provide for your family.
Thanksgiving shifts our perspective. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the past, which builds our trust for His faithfulness in the future. This process—this act of presenting our requests with gratitude—is what unlocks the promise. And the promise is not that God will instantly remove the problem. The promise is peace. It says the peace of God will “guard your hearts and your minds.” Think about that word. Guard. It’s a military term. It means to stand watch. To protect.
When you release your anxieties to God, His peace stands guard over your heart, so that fear cannot overwhelm it. His peace stands guard over your mind, so that worst-case scenarios cannot consume it. It's a peace that “transcends all understanding.” You might not be able to explain it. The problem might still be there. But you are held. You are protected. That guard is on duty for you today.
