Morning Mercies: A Daily Bible Verse and Gentle Reflection

The sun rose this morning at a specific, scheduled time, just as it did yesterday. It's an event so reliable we plan our entire lives around it. In our last episode, we talked about finding quiet strength for anxious hearts. Today's reading is the foundation for that strength—the reason it never runs out. Here are the words from the book of Lamentations, chapter three. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Let’s sit with that for a moment. Especially that first line.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. The word for steadfast here means loyal, covenanted, and determined. It’s not a feeling that comes and goes. It’s a commitment that holds firm, regardless of the circumstances. It is love that has made a promise and intends to KEEP it. Here's what that means for you, right now. God’s fundamental posture toward you is not one of irritation. It’s not disappointment. It’s not a critical eye waiting for you to mess up. His fundamental posture toward you is steadfast, determined love. That was true yesterday. It is true today.

And it will be true tomorrow. It does not change. Then the writer adds another layer. He says God’s mercies never come to an end. Mercy is different from love. Mercy is love in action when we don't deserve it. It’s kindness in the face of our failures. It’s compassion when we are weak. It’s forgiveness when we have done wrong. And the promise here is that this resource—this well of compassion—is infinite. You cannot exhaust it. You can't use up your lifetime allotment of God's mercy by noon. It never, ever runs dry. But here’s the turn. Here’s the part that changes everything about the day in front of you.

The writer says these mercies are new EVERY morning. Think about what that means. The mercy you needed for yesterday… is gone. It was used for yesterday's troubles, yesterday’s worries, yesterday's mistakes. You don't carry a deficit into today. You don't start with a spiritual debt. When the sun came up this morning, a completely fresh, full, and custom-made supply of mercy was made available for you. It is mercy designed specifically for the challenges of THIS day. For the conversations you will have today. For the temptations you will face today. For the weariness you will feel this afternoon.

It’s not leftover mercy. It’s not recycled mercy. It is brand new. This is something a lot of people find confusing. We tend to think God’s forgiveness is like a bank account we draw from. And we worry we’re making too many withdrawals. But this verse gives us a totally different picture. It’s not a bank account you deplete. It’s a daily provision, like bread delivered to your door each morning. Yesterday’s bread is for yesterday. Today, there is fresh bread. And why can we be so sure of this? The verse ends with the reason. “Great is your faithfulness.” This daily renewal of mercy isn’t based on your performance.

It isn’t based on you feeling worthy of it. It’s based on the very character of God. He is faithful. That is who He is. And because He is faithful, His love is steadfast. And because His love is steadfast, His mercies are new for you, this morning. So as you step into this day, whatever it holds, you are not working with yesterday’s resources. You are not defined by yesterday’s failures. You are equipped with a fresh measure of grace, tailor-made for the next twenty-four hours. Your past does not define your portion for today. His mercy does.
